    Storing zinc badges

    Hi,

    I'd like to ask the members for some help in deciding the best way to store some newly purchased mint zinc GAB's. I received these badges (The Stuttgart GAB Horde) in clear plastic ziplock baggies, and they have remained in them until now. I have the rest of my tombak and zinc awards lying on a 100% synthetic polyester bed inside of small white cardpaper boxes which are kept in a larger cardpaper boxes, and kept in a vault. The humidity is not a factor in my region, or in my house, so I am not particularly worried about this. But what I am concerned with is whether leaving these GAB's in these little plastic baggies will harm them. Are they better off lying on the synthetic bed like the others? I would appreciate any help anyone could provide me.

    Humidity seems to be the main enemy of these so you are likely ahead of the game. I would get them out of the plastic and wrap them in unbleached 100% cotton muslin that has been washed in Arm & Hammer Free detergent. Then put the wrapped badges in acid free archival boxes. The plastic in the bags might outgas chemical compounds that could have any unknown effect on the badges over time, in my opinion.

        From the many PM's and e-mails I've received from forum members regarding safe storage methods for my badges, I've removed all of the polyester 'blankets' or 'beds' out of these small boxes and replaced them with acid-free washed 100% cotton linen. Where I store cased badges in these boxes I've surrounded them with acid-free washed cotton muslin. I think this should be adequate. I don't know what the long-term effect would have been with these badges laying on polyester 'blankets', but I don't have to wonder anymore. Thank you all for your help.

          Hi Robert,

          You might want to use a single Riker case & add some silica gel below the cusion. Next firmly tape it up if you dont intend to open it.
