How do you store your items ?

Hi all. I have noticed and also read about the finnsh-loss of zinkbadges. Cosed by keppt in moist conditions. I have some badges that started and have lost the finnish. Once it started it seems to go pretty fast from decent finnish left til Zink-grey. How humid is " humid condition" ? I got an cabinett and in there it is around 45-50 % humidety. Is that considered to mutch ?? Waht would be the ultimate storage for just keeping them safe?? This is an dilemma since i prefer to see my collection in the cabinett with the lights on at the evenings.Looks nice. But on the other hand you dont want your badges and stuff to decay eather . How have you solved our storage/ displaying /safekeeping ?

    Hello Mikael!

This is a very important topic for us collectors, how to store our medals. It’s the same with coins, and a coin dealer once gave me a very important advice.

Like with coins, I think it is “dangerous” to put a medal away/for display right away. My advice is to use cotton gloves when you have a new medal or perhaps even touch your medals. You will see that a lot of dirt and fingerprint"fat" will be removed from the medals. If you buy a medal at a show or from a dealer, just imagine all those interested collectors who have touched the medal before you. And what did they eat for lunch – French fries or potato chips? Too much grease and fat may damage a medals surface over time.

If you, with cotton gloves, look like an idiot or a serious private museum curator can be discussed

I store my medals on frames in a glass cabinet, and I avoid sun and swinging temperature in the room where I have my collection. Hope someone else can give advice on humidity and how to prevent zink from loosing its finish.

Thank you for your input militaria.no !! . I do use cottongloves, i admitt i cheats sometimes. ,) The gloves prevent for moor fat etc to get on the medals. but what about the stuff aleady there ?? I thinkto start up the carfull treatment of them by your self , using gloves for an example, the medals etc has to be clean from the start.I would like to clean them in an way not affecting/ ruinig the finnsih or in anny toher way affecting patia etc. Just in an clinicla point of wuiv, like fat, dirt etc. Then the medal would be at " zero" and gloves would do some real good. Effective way of cleaning stuff and nor ruin them ??
