    The elusive Regimental Medal ribbon

I run across the regimental medals pretty regular. But after getting a couple, I pass them by because most come without ribbons. With the ribbons and named clasps, they can be quite rare, depending on the unit. They are nicely made medals of a very high quality. Here is an example of an original with original ribbon.

But I have yet to find the ribbons offered separate or even a firm that reproduces them. So I thought I'd try my hand at making one. What you see below is my attempt at a Prussian version in red, white and black. I started with white ribbon and permanent markers.

Once I had the length I needed, I decided to build a mount.

Here is the result. I would never sell this as original, but the original medal certainly presents better on its own colors. So what do you think? Steve

Thanks Jimmy. I know it seems a bit unorthodox, but I cannot find a loose ribbon or even a modern manufactured strip of this. But if you need a line on the best permanent markers.....

That is very impressive. It's hard to believe you can do this with a marker!

                Hello,

VERY nicely done, and not unlike what is done in museum restorations all the time.

                Regards,
                William Unland

Very cool way to make a ribbon. The ribbon you have is for the Prussian Red Cross medals not the regimentals. The regimentals a typically mainly blue.

                    Thanks for the comments guys.

Welcome to the forum Baden col.

Actually, they came in a wide variety of ribbon colors as seen in these examples. The ribbon does seem identical in some cases to the Red Cross ribbon. Hadn't picked up on it before, so now maybe that would be a way to find this ribbon for the red examples. But they certainly exist with this ribbon and mounted with clasps.

Many corresponded to the various states in some examples and in others, there seems no rhyme or reason. I've even seen them stuck on Kyff ribbon or Front Fighter ribbon, but never that way mounted or with clasps.

I have yet to find a decent reference on these and have gathered what info I have from examples on the web at various auction houses. I am not even sure who produced them but am still researching. Steve
