    I Was Going To Throw This Out ...

    Hi Guys,

    A 1914 EK1 Government Issue Case that had seen better days.

    It came with a 'job lot' of odds and ends mainly 1914 wound badges and iron crosses.

    Instead I took two periods of about 10 minutes each to stick the loose bits and clean it up. Not a complex restoration and some purests may prefer it the way it was but at least saved from destruction.

    Inside has not been touched.

                      Hi Peter,

                      I went to an Antique shop where the owner told me to use the white woodworkers glue being PVA. A small amount was applied with a Q-Tip and held in place by my fingers. PVA glue is very 'thin' so becareful you don't spill it all over the place.

                      The owner said that it was ideal for wood, leather and leatherette but do not get it on the silk. He renovates cases (albeit on a larger scale).

                      This took about 10 minutes in all and that included working out what attached to what and carrying out a couple of 'dry' runs.

                      No clamping was needed as the glue is manouverable but does take up adhesion pretty quick.

                      Colouring was applied with a bit of black bootpolish and a damp piece of 4x2 cleaning flannellete that I use to clean the barrel of my rifle with and polished off carefully with a soft yellow duster.

                      This was done twice - again taking about 10 minutes with a total of 20 minutes all up.

                      I decided to leave the silk interior alone for now but may approach this when I can find out more about cleaning silk.

                      Admittedly, no longer showing the age of history but there again, it's not in the bin either and I've decided to enter it into my collection - just need a cross to go in it.

                        A fine job. Looks much better and would probably fetch more in the improved condition. And even if it didn't, it will last longer than had you not touched it at all. Certainly longer than if you had thrown it away! Steve

                          Nice job mate !! With a little time and care and common sense, a little bit of tidying up a tired case such as this one was/is fair play - you'd restore an old book, so why not this.

                          There are cases where the extent of the wear be that least or excessive, I'd advise perhaps to leave well alone.

                          But I think all due credit to you for a job well done !
