    Help with Paper Conservation

    Hello All,
    <O</O
Does anyone have advice for conservation of a paper document. It is not military, but my great grandparents marriage license from 1915. My mother has it and would like to display it, but we both have concerns with doing it in a way to help with slowing any deterioration. I know there are certain types of backing, framing material and special glass (to block uv light) but really don’t have a clue where to start. I know that you document/paper item collectors out there must deal with this all the time. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Words of Advice

    Good morning,

One oculd get wrody here but my advice would be to take it to a professional framing service. Tell them what you desire to do and they will help you. Archival matting and backing as well as UV filtering glass would be an absolute. If he document needs repair or is yellowing or has tape on it you may need to contact a paper conservator. Search American Institute of Conservation (AIC) and they will have a few listed for your area.

I would make a nice copy on quality paper, print it and hang that. Store the original.

That's a good idea Marc. It certainly would simplify things.

          Thanks,
