How to preserve a damaged photo

    Hello guys,

I have a question and I really hope some one can help me out here.

I bought a really nice wehrpass of a 19 year old Pionier with a lot awards. The rings in the photo of the wehrpass were however terribly rostet, so I took the photo out of the pass, took out the rustet rings and want to glue the photo back in the wehrpass.

However the photo is (was already) badly damaged. The "film" of the photo is letting loose, that is my greatest worry on this.

My question: what can I do to preserve the photo, so the film of the photo will not further damage?

    Any help will be appriciated.

Not a lot of help to you - but I would have left the photo in situ and not messed around with the document - I'd rather have a WP or SB with rusted rivets holding the photo in than a photo removed and then glued in. Personally, I would'nt glue it in now, I'd just leave it loose, & I'd scan it so I have a copy of it but that's about it........

        Hello Leigh,

Normally I do not mess around with pictures and rusty rings, but these rings became big of the rust and fell (almost) out of the paper. If I did not remove it, it would have felled out by itself within a short time.

I thought (and think) this is the best I could do. If I manage to restore the picture, I am very happy with the wehrpass.

        Anyway, thanks for your reply.

        Best,
        Erich

              Here Is A Start

I was just fooling around but here is a start for you. If you take the time you can create a replacement for yourself and save your original with the book. If you don't want to do it, get a pro to do it for you. This whole proceess took me about 5 min. but with some love and patients you can do amazing things.

How do you prevent them from getting worser?
As I have about 100 very rare photos in a photoalbum which has serieus waterdamage, what about that?

First I would fix the rip and the loose surface by using a needle and some glue on it...,then I would glue a new backing to the pic and then try to put some new rivets on the old places in the new paper backing...,but I guess the page also has big holes in it ?

In any case I would restore the pic to prevent it for further damage and then you can choose to put it back or to use a replacement made by PC..

                      Good luck,

                      Jos.
