    How NOT to pack and send an item...

    Hi,

    I'm not sure if this is the best forum for this subject - maybe I just want/need to vent!

    A recent arrival while I was away from home, purchased from the E-stand - so I'm stuck with it. Unfortunately I don't have a pre-postage pic saved, but I can guarantee it did not look like this when it was sold!

    The bubble-wrap envelope package had obviously been TOTALLY waterlogged somewhere between Denmark and Australia. Unfortunately the seller only packed it in a bit of white paper and newspaper

    If it was a paper doc of any sort, it would be ruined. Guys, if you are going to post something, wrap it in some form of plastic at the very least!

    I guess I now have an unwanted preservation project. I'll let you know how it goes. Step 1 - oil bath...

    Hi Mike ... yes a Pet Peeve of mine as well. I've seen badges thrown in a flat cardboard envelope with delicate pins / catch and hinge assemblies. Makes you want to weep

    P.S. Was this some rare maker marked WB?

      Mike, Sorry you had a bad shipping experience. I sell on eBay and always place shipped items in a sealed plastic bag to start with. This was after seeing a friend have a similar experience as yours. He received an item that appeared to have been left sitting on a loading dock in the rain for some time. Item and wrap was completely soaked with water. Fortunately the item was a U.S. steel helmet so there was no permanent damage.

      As for restoring your badge, get a spray can of satin finish black. Not matte or gloss but satin. I use RUST-OLEUM brand available in any hardware store here in the States. I've restored a couple of black wound badges and it is such a perfect match I can't tell the restored ones from the originals. I try to remove all remaining original paint and then after spraying I stick it in the oven preheated to about 250-300 degrees and then shut off. Just leave it in until it's hot to the touch.         packing

        When I have to ship a badge or medal with a clasp on the back I take several layers of cardboard and cut a slot for the pin assemble to fit into and a few layers with the badge shape cut into it then I put the badge into a pthin plastic bag and using my vacu-sealer suck out the air till the plastic snuggles down to the badge then place it inside the cardboard protectors then tape it up and then place in bubble wrap and place in mailing box.

          We have all had something like this unfortunetely, I bought an EK1 Case off the estand, and he packed it in a bubble envelope when it arrived it was thinner than a dime I mailed it back as I was pissed still havent heard back from him as he has my money.....Learned a good lesson though, never buy anything more off him

              My Russian Hoard cased EK1 came in a thin jiffy bag, with the case open with a single tissue wrapped around it - no extra bubble wrap or waterproof sealable bag mind you.

              Also, the postie left it on the driveway and the wife just missed running over it in the car.

              She came in and said with a smile that she had a parcle for me which looked like it was thick enough to hold a very thin EKII. Not expecting an EKII I opened the package with some trepidation.

              The cross and case though were just perfect but it still makes me want to **** myself just thinking about it.

              When I send something like a badge I bulk up any hinge with card and then wrap in bubble wrap.

              This goes into a sealable plastic bag.

              This goes into a plastic snap shut case.

              This goes into a stout cardboard box and is bulked up with screwed up newspaper.

              Skip, though is the best packer. I bought a destroyer badge from him and it came in a shoe box - and a big shoe box at that !!!

                What you say about Skip is very true, I always get a huge box from him packed to keep a peice of china from breaking, although he has been screwed by others packing methods too just like us...

                  I bought a bar of 4 x WWI British medals from a dealer in America a while back - original ribbons on a brooch - they were beautifully packed, bullet proof from the outside, but just left loose & rattling around in the package, so you can guess what happened to the nice original fragile old ribbons with these things bouncing around in the box.

                  Oh, & I forgot - when I mentioned this to the dealer, he said that he did'nt think that collectors in the UK were worried about original/ replacement ribbons............
