Pest Question ?

With zinc pest being corrosive, though I have not read a list of the damages it occurs in detail, just ways to treat it and slow it down. My question is if a badge has this does it cause pitting like rust does to iron, disfiguring features like leaves and acorns on the wreath and other badge features ?
