Hey, I remember that winter camo experiment Cody !!! I thought that helmet was the pride of a high end collection by now (just kidding). Yes I am very interested to see how this will come out.

The helmet looks the same. The West Coast distributor reports removing rust is effective with unpainted steel rather than removing rust on a painted item.

            Very interesting thread indeed!
I dont wanna highjack this thread, but would you guys suggest any treatment for this helmet, or leave it as it is?

As well as this grenade, any thoughts?

Well, it's been two weeks and the helmet looks the same other than the rust may have penetrated into the paint a bit more.

After washing the thing of Gibbs, which wasn't particularly easy, it had to receive fresh 'patina' by rubbing dirt from the garden into the paint. There, now, it's ready for eBay. Just kidding, but, we've all seen this sort of thing regularly foisted.

Thank you! Im just wondering in long term effect.. I mean, If I can prevent it from rusting away with in 200 years by applying oil, instead of having the present "authentic" state for 50years.. you get my concern, as I want these items to out live me more than anything, cause then I feel I'v done my job as a collector

But I'll follow your advice, and I'll keep any eye on them

I wouldn't try electrolysis on something with paint work i was trying to preserve.

One of the big problems i've had is stabilising items. ie. once cleaned stopping further rusting. I tried WD40 and other types of oil but by far the best stuff i've come across is Owatrol. It can leave a slightly gloss look after aplication but a spray of matt varnish sorts that out. Of course i only use this on relic items that would otherwise rust to nothing if not treated.

On a lighter note, Locktight Rust preventer will stop rust, and will put a black coating on the item.

                            Cheers
