    Jump Boot Help

    I just bought a pair of WW2 US jump boots from one of my friends for a darn good price. They are in good condition and have been worn. The problem is this, someone after WW2 decided to dye the boots black. Is there any way to take the dye off? If not, no big deal, they'll go well with my Korean War era US para uniforms. Thanks in advance!

    The short answer is "Unfortunately, no." Anything you do to dyed leather ios as likely to damage it as improve it, especially if the dying was done with some
    now unidnetifiable comercial product. This would be a professional conservtor's job and maybe not even then. Sorry!

      You can try acetone in small amounts dabbed on a cloth and rubbed briskly into the leather. Go slow working small areas and you will see immediatly if this is removeing the black dye. It may also remove the brown dye as well...if there was much left to start with.

      The boots may have well have been dyed by a soldier during the mid to late 50's when the entire Army went to black boots. My father dyed his jump boots for that reason (orders) during that time frame.

      I have never seen acetone damage leather and I know that it is used in commercial dye removers, but proceed at your own risk and in a small area.
