    Red Patina on Tombak Badges?

Hi everyone, over the years a red/rust colored patina has developed on some of my tombak badges. It appears on the base metal and on the gilt finish. Is there a way to remove it without harming the guilding?Does anyone know what causes it?Moisture or handling perhaps?I,ve attatched some examples below, many thanks,Martin.

          How do you store them?
Some modern cloth and foam backings contains chemicals that will kill the finish of our badges. Moisture and direct sunlight is a destructor. Sticky fingers are an enemy as well.

Peter,i keep the badges in a wooden case and i used to have a black felt backing. i,ve changed the felt to a black velvet recently. Most of the discoloration occured when i had the felt backing.I do live in a Californian rain forest and it gets pretty damp up her e in the Winter.I think i,ve solved the humidity problem,i would just like to remove the "patina",many thanks,Martin.
