    Cleaning tombak/enamel

    Dear all,

I am new to this forum but have been around some of the German forums for some time. As a quick introduction: I am 29 years old, originally from Germany but moved to Ireland for good in 1999. I am collecting all things to do with the city of Danzig due to my own family coming from Danzig and having had to leave in 1945.

    Now to my question:

What is the best way to clean a tombak and enamel decoration? It is only slightly soiled and I don't want to use anything heavy. Would soapy water be ok applied with q-tips?

I read the thread about the enamel cleaning but as this is an enamel and tombak piece I just wanted to make sure not to use anything that might have a negative effect on one or the other.

Thank you very much for your help. It is much appreciated.

    Kind regards,
    Rene

    Rene,

If the enamal is in sound condition then gently washing it with a neutral soap such as Ivory and and some warm water should do the trick. You may want to use a very soft toothbrush instead of a Q-tip. Again gently is the key word.

Be sure to dry it completely when finished.

      Hi Tony,

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I think the soap and water might be the best solution. I will try it and let you know how it worked out.

      Thanks and best wishes,
      Rene
