    Cleaning a Brocade Belt?

I have a WW1 brocade belt which is filthy. I thought it was gold until I read upon it and it's meant to be silver! Does anyone have any remedies at all? You can see the potential at the left hand 'keeper' as you look at the pic

I've done a search and unearthed two old threads recommending that they should not be cleaned but any advice is welcome.
