Rust on Panzer Headsets

Hi there, I know rust is a tried and tested topic of all forums here but I have not yet found one on headsets per se.

I just became the proud owner of a pair off the e-stand and it has considerable rusting to the joints sections very similar to the one pictured below, (I will put actual pictures of my headphone's rust later).

I am concerned and as the paint has already been removed I am not squeemish about a 0000 steel wool job on the surface, but what then? I was thinking a very thin coat of vasilene or oil to cover over it. That works for daggers and my fencing sword

Hi Jeff, I personally would leave them alone. Kept in the correct environment the rust should not get worse.

But if you want you could carefully remove any loose surface rust by carefully rubbing the affected area with a cotton wool bud. I would be more tempted to use a wax as opposed to oil. Oil might creep under the paint and cause some to lift.

Cotton wool, is that with water or detergent? I'm pretty sure it will take a slegehammer to budge some of this stuff

I read from the helmet guys on this forum that steelwool and some kind of chemical agent to neutralise the rust works as well

Hi Jeff, like I said, I am not one to mess with stuff The more you do to an item, the more it moves away from being "original, untouched".

Cotton wool buds are those little sticks with cotton wool ends which can be used to clean you ears with.

Ultra fine wire wool is OK, but it needs to be used with great care. You can soon remove paint with it, if it is loose.

Hi Jeff, having now seen your actual set, I think I would just apply some wax and that would be it. They are not bad at all.

Though I think I will try the "V" section that "springs" the speaker to the headset, that's entirely covered in rust and I can't help but think it will spread ... I just hate rust!

I would leave it alone, if your room is dry I would not think it would get any worse.

ok, popped out to the hardware store and got some 000 wool, and beeswax,

Its looking much better IMHO.

Nicely done Jeff I see there has been a little more paint loss but this did look very dry and loose to start with. I always worry about telling anyone to try anything but you have carried out the work carefully. You need do nothing else but sit back and admire your new purchase.

Yes some came off even in the unscrewing of the nuts, but I fully expected that given the state of the rust. the main bolt on the left earphone had jammed and I had to be especially careful there, I fully imagined, in about 5 years time all the bolts and nuts becoming stuck if I hadn't intervened

I am a bit paranoid about rust, in any form, when you think about it, its really nature saying, I want my iron ore back!

That looks much better, I wouldn't be able to resist doing that either, the loose rust would bug me senseless.
