    Luftwaffe sword w/early nickle silver fittings to clean or not to clear?

    I have a very nice LW sword with nickle silver fittings rather than the aluminum type. The nickle silver has tarnished with age and looks rather unattractive. Is there anything I can do to clean it or would it be better to leave it alone? I don't want to do anything that would harm the gilding in the crossguard and pommel. Any help appreciated.

    Don"t Clean It!!!

    Sorry for the outburst above.. , I personally appreciate the appearance of "untouched" (i.e. uncleaned) edged weapons, and I know that sentiment is shared by many collectors far more advanced than I am. That is not to say that the "green goo" that forms around brass and nickel should be allowed to go unchecked, but if what you have looks like dark, tarnished silver, I personally would pay (and have paid) a premium for a piece with that dark "right out of the footlocker" look.

    So should you clean it to shiny bright?...

      if you find it unattractive, sell it or trade it for one that is attractive to you.
      i'm with william there are to many people(me included) that like to see that. and once gone you can't put it back.

        You can easily find Luft swords that have been cleaned if you like. As the other fellows above mentioned leave these patinaed pieces well enough alone. There are many seasoned sword collectors that seek out these unmessed with examples. Including me.

          Thanks guys. I'll try to get a few pics posted by Sunday. It is just that the patina is very dark and not very attractive unlike some other pieces that I have encountered.
