Document preservation recommendations and questions

I have several groupings of award documents in my collection, and I would like to hear how the other forum members are safely storing their documents.

I noticed the OfficeMax, Target, etc. offer 'archival safe and acid free' envelopes. I purchased a 100 count box of heavy weight, clear poly sheet protectors from OfficeMax for like $12.

I have hear that mylar is preferred for document preservation. Is poly OK?

Any thoughts on document preservation would be appreciated.

I purchased the same deal, a packet of protectors at OfficeMax, the archival ones. I keep all but one or two documents in a binder (4 ring, that I purchased in Germany) in a fireproof safe. Once in awhile I get it out and thumb through it.
For a couple of my larger groupings, I have them in the sleeves, and then in a cardboard box with all the other stuff (medals, booklets, etc.).
Not a lot of detail...but that's what I do!

I actually prefer to go with the mylar sleeves. They are more expensive, but sturdy and are considered the best protection for documents. I usually buy the the three ring binder version that are open on one end; these are made for comic books but are perfect for documents as well. I like to keep each document group in a seperate binder on a dark self away from the sunlight. Humidity is important as well, not just for your documents, but for all of your collection. (Humidity should be around 60).

I bought the museum archival cases at B&H Photo here in NY. They also sell online. They run about $40 and I can fill them with the mylar of varying sizes. They shut out all light.
