Helmet display

Hi Guys,

I wonder how you display your'e helmets. Does the liner leather need support within the helmet ? For example to use foam with a sheet arround it to put in the helmet to keep the liner shaped ? Or is that a bad idee ? I have read somewhere, I think.....

Opinions would be great (I just bought my first DD M35 )

To avoid any unnecessary stress on the 60+ year-old leather, it would be advisable to use a fairly narrow stand that extends to the inside of the helmet dome. There are commercially produced wooden or plexiglass stands available from several sources.

As an additional note, stretching the chinstrap over the visor portion of the helmet is also not advisable and will definitely increase the chance of breaking the strap.

Will a stand damage the dome stamp? Is it better to just sit the helmet on it's own edges?

Marc,

Placing a helmet on a stand (pedestal) or displaying it resting on its edges is a matter of individual choice. With my helmets, I prefer having them elevated on stands which allows one to view the liner and chinstrap. As far as damaging the dome stamp, I've not encountered any problems. Whether the stand is wood or metal I "cap" the top of the pedestal with uncolored, 100% acrylic felt pads to avoid any possibility of scratching the stamp.

I display my helmets on stands just because i like the way they look that way...I was concerned about damaging the dome stamps so i put a small piece of fabric between the stand and the helmet, as not to damage the stamp...I hope this helps.....

Thanks. I just put mine on a stand with some fabric between the helmet and the stand in order to keep the dome stamp safe.

Helmet display

The best thing to place between the helmet stand and the interior of the helmet or hat is acid free tissue paper, archival cardboard or a piece of unbleached muslin cloth. If you choose to use any of these, you will lessen the incidence of reactivity between the stand and the item. All may be purchased at online archival supply stores. Most framing shops have acid free tissue paper or archival cardboard. Mike
