Hi Johannes, I would say yes for sure. These lights are strong. If you only have them on for a short period of time you might be OK, but I would be very wary about using these.

    Cheers, Ade.

Keep them a distance away and if you can put some UV proof glass on them

Next to fluorescent light, halogen is probably one of the worst for cloth/colored and paper items for fade. Halogen is also hotter than a branding iron searing the butt of a cow.

Hello all - I am posting an image of my lighting that I use to show my collection. What I like about my track lighting is that I can adjust the lighting from low to high.

My track light equipment is from Lightolier with Edison 50 track & recessed halogen lights.

I use Halogen but have sourced very weak halogen that are just enough for my needs and hardly get warm that much at all, they are only 5 watt each and are UV filter glass bulbs. I only have them on for a couple of hours a day on a timer when I am usually in my collection den but the heat given out is virually nil.
But as far as the standard 50 Watt Halogen go

Jon - Thanks for making some interesting points.

About using 50 watt halogen bulbs, that was the reason why I mentioned that I can adjust my light system from bright to very dim (high to low). I believe that light size would need to be specific to the needs of a person's collection as shown with the picture posted below of my collection room with the track lighting.

I don't know how halogen lights affect materials but I do know that the effectiveness of halogen lights has to do with the fact that they can operate at significantly higher tempratures than normal lightbulbs.

I think even with a dimmer they would be apt to generate a whole lot of heat which might stay trapped in an enclosure like a case. I also know that oxidation is greatly increased with increased temprature.

I would think, therefore, that one should be concerned with heat transfered to the medals. The speed with which they tarnish and/or rust would be increased significantly, but perhaps not at speeds that would be noticable over short periods?

I am concerned about lighting and uv damage. I currently have a halogen floor lamp in the room with my display. What should I do? Get a UV filter (where would I get one), or use differant lighting? What is the best lighting solution for display rooms? Any thoughts?

                        Hi Johannes,

Ikea sells halogen lights that have a UV-filter. All the bulbs on my Ikea track lighting system is anti-UV.

                        Regards,

                        Konrad
