How I Aged my Repro DKiG

Hi everyone, I decided I'd make a little thread about how I age my repro medals so they don't look awful on tunics. I know for a lot of collectors, completing a tunic with all original awards can be expensive and personally for me, that is the case. I'd rather buy a $30 DKiG replica and age it rather than save up for an authentic DKiG, if it is just to display on a tunic. Anyways here is the DKiG I aged today and the process that I did for it.

The first thing I did was get some sandpaper and ruff up the metal disk that the swasticka lays on. After this I got some Aircraft paint remover and applied this to the black painted edges of the DKiG to remove the factory paint job. In my opinion it looks awful and so I decided I would redo it. After I removed the black paint from the edges I went and got some Black shoe polish and applied it to the wreath, the metal disk below the swasticka and to the area where the former black paint was. After this I set it out in the sun to dry up the shoe polish. The look I was going for was the more silvery grey outer edges that are seen on some CE Juncker DKiGs and Otto Klein DKiGs. Hope you all enjoy

    Hello there,

Firstly I'd like to say that if it works for you then fine ,I wish you the all the best

I'm the kind of person where if asked for an opinion ill give it and in this instance my opinion is that I dislike reproduction militaria full stop.

I see absolutely no attraction in having (in this instance) an original third Reich tunic decorated with an artificially aged decoration. I take your point on the financial side of things and as I said before good luck to you but when I see repros and worse again artificially aged repros it sticks in my throat.

I'd love to see your original tunic mind you

    Kind regards ,

    Ross

Whats wrong to put Copies on Tunics??? If i would put on each Tunic i own original Medals i need a Bank right behind it. He give it the best try, and to me it looks well done. If you can afford to put on every Tunic original Medals be happy with it, but not laugh about others who may not able to do so......

          Hi guys,
First of all , I personally dislike repro medals and in particular aged ones !
Eventually they tend to infect our hobby, if and when they hit the open market ! That’s what we are struggling with all the time .
That said, each to his own ofcause

I think this tread belong in a different forum, perhaps “ Collection display forum”, “ Living history forum” or “Model building and display forum “ ??
          How about that ?

          Best regards

I understand very well what you say, and still i give a Crap. And where ever you make full stop is your Problem. He try to age a Medal to looks nice on the Tunic, and he did it will, thats all. No issues to put them on Tunics, at last not for me. And i love to see one Collector who can afford to put on 30 or more Tunic original Medals...yeah sure)))))

But it will never "look nice" on a tunic because it is not from the period!! You are missing the point . Reproductions (particularly artificially aged one's are poisonous in this hobby because they fool people) however the gent above isn't selling it so as I said at the start ,good luck to him.

I do not miss the Point, and know very well what you try to say. Still, fact is that when you own several Tunic, you simple can't afford to buy for each one origina Medals. I have 3 KC Winner Tunics, a few Dk Winner Tunics and several other who are high on Lametta. And so, what to do? Display them without Medals what make not much Sense, or go for good Repros and put them on Display. And Poison our Hobby, if you do your Homework you will not fall for them. If it comes to Tunic Displays, there is no issue to me. Everything else is another Story. And the Thread Starter is relative fresh in Hobby, got a nice Dk Winner Tunic where he put a lot Afford into it do research it. I am 30 Years into this Hobby, and less and less new Collectors show up. So we should be happy that when a new one come, that he try his best to get into the Hobby......

This is a discussion forum so I'm giving my opinion which I stand by 100%. If it were me I would have a lesser tunic then factor in the cost for the original awards.

You say "what sense" regarding not having the awards displayed on a nice tunic well I say "what sense" in having a nice original tunic then pinning 10 bob fakes all over it!!

or go for good repros [/QUOTE]

This is what I'm trying to say...there are no good repros, they are all bad ,you say how good it is that young collectors are finding their way in the hobby, yes fantastic but again I make the point ,fakes are poisonous to all collectors but particularly to the above mentioned ,they have no place in the hobby full stop.

Again, good for you. You have your Opinion, what is great for you, and i am happy you have one and i am even more happy you are 100%. Next time when you visit a Museum, go check the Tunics there and what Medals are on each of them, then come back and tell me if all are perfect originals. When its good enough for a RAF Museum in your Country to have fake Awards on there Tunics, sure it is good enough for me and many many others

Sure they have, they make it more challenging. And really, no worrie, nothing here is personal and ever will be. I only say what i think. There are Tons and Tons of good and very good Fakes out there. And i only talk here about Tunics and how to Display them. And there they are good enough. What to do? Buy several 10K KCs to hang them on a Tunic? No thanks
