    French Croix de Guerre

    Greetings Gents,

The Great War has been much on my mind lately with the 100th anniversary just the other day. So I decided to take some photos of a small portion of my collection that relates. Nothing very large, special, or rare here but I do love the character of these French Croix de Guerre medals.

    Enjoy,

    Z

          Very nice collection indeed.

Anyway, your "croix de guerre de l'État français" aka "croix de guerre Vichy" should be labelled 1941 instead of 1939
It's a rare one since his wearing is banned after January 1944.

Thank you my friends for the kind words. I'm glad to have shared my small collection here. Over many decades of collecting, I've chased many various tangents and as a result, my "collection" is probably one of the most unfocused you will ever see. I have piles of everything from old vintage ammunition to German helmets to ground dug US Civil War items to Iron Crosses to WWI US tunics and the list just goes on and on. But I've always enjoyed everything I've collected and just tried to acquire things that were interesting to me. Now as I sit back and look, each item holds a pleasant memory and it like an old friend to me.

Höhe 112, thank you for taking the time to share that info about the Vichy era cross. I dated them according to the stamp on the reverse and in this case, the cross is stamped 1939. I don't know a great deal about these medals and their variants beyond just a basic understanding, so I do thank you for the information.

                Keep Well My Friends,

                Z

                    You're welcome.

The "Croix de guerre de l'État français" was created end of March 1941 by decision of the Marechal Petain government to supersede the "Croix de guerre 1939".
Your example have his reverse stamped 1939 instead of the 1939-1940 normaly encountered on such "Croix de guerre Vichy". It's not an issue and it's certainly because an old cross was reused with the new green ribbon before the availability of the new dated cross.
They did exist some different non regular models with dates stamped on the reverse like: 1941, 1942, 1943, 1944, 1939-1941, 1939-1942, 1939-1943, 1939-1944 and one other rare model had his front engraved with a "Francisque and Etat Français" on it

                    Anyway, it's funny to know:
_ Vichy banished the wearing of the "Croix de guerre 1939" but some of them were continued to be wear after the swap of their ribbon with the new "green Vichy" ribbon. (Maybe it's what happened with yours).
_ After the banishment of the "Croix de guerre Vichy", some of them (manufactured during the short period: 06.01.1941/01.07.1944) have seen their ribbon changed as well for the 1939 one to "allow" his wearing after the date of his prohibition.

                      Hi,

Zachary, here is all you need to know about the WW2 Croix de Guerre (especially my posts).

                      http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=951497

                      http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...1&postcount=12

I may suggest you to search the official Monnaie de Paris models for WW2 :

                      - 1939
                      - 1939-1940 ("Vichy") with first and second ribbon (first ribbon is very hard to get)
                      - 1939 1st post-war model
                      - 1939 2nd post-war model (still sold today)

and the two Pinches models made in London :

                      http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=947339

(the Vichy Croix de Guerre you have is a private model, dozen of types exist, imo the only good ones are the official ones by La Monnaie de Paris).

I can help you if you want, each MdP model is worth 10 to 15 euros, the Pinches are more around 50 euros each.

                      See You

                        Vince and Höhe 112,

Thanks you guy very much for all that great information. I've always loved the appearance of this award but over the years, I've never really bothered learning very much about it. So it was really fascinating to read those posts. It just goes to show that no matter how many decades you've been collecting, you can learn something new everyday until you check out.

I've read some whiny posts lately from young people calling this a "useless site" but in my experience, nothing can be further from the truth. You guys are a prime illustration of that. Even with the technical problems, this place is a bargain for the price. I find daily joy in browsing around looking at new threads, seeing people's collections, and learning new things like what you guys posted about the Croix de Guerre. And the icing on the cake of course is the opportunity to pick up some nice items for my collection at bargain prices while "meeting" and corresponding with a great group of all-around fine gents such as yourselves.

                        Keep Well Friends,

                        Z

                          hi ZacharyB,

What a surprise to see a lot of beautiful "croix de guerre"
how do you get the idea to collect this medal?

i get the "croix de guerre" of my grand-grand father, he was killed and burried in Verdun in front of the "ossuaire de Douaumont" his tombstone number is 12590 square "E" he rest with 16142 others brothers in arm.

i can't show you his medal because i m just a basic member, i can't posted pictures and i loaned it for an exposition for the centenial anniversary, i get it back in few days but if you want to see it i can send you an email.

my forum avatar is a colored picture of my forefather before he goes to war he died one year later ,11th july 1915

                          thank for your beautiful pictures

                          have a good day
