Displaying medals in a wall-mounted case

I searched the forums and didn't find anything that really helped with this question.

How do I affix medals to a display box designed for pins? It has a felt-like material with a foam backing to it. I just don't know how to 'hang' the medals in there without putting a pin through the ribbon which I really don't want to do.

How do you do it? Or are your medal cases horizontal on a surface?

Hey wiking, what i did with mine is added another layer or two of 1/2 foam padding and put a layer of black felt material on top of that so that the glass holds the badge or ribbon in place

    Best regards
    Jared

Sounds like a good idea. I'll give that a try. Thanks.

Take a scroll tyhrough this thread: http://www.sovietawardsfunplace.com/...hp?f=52&t=1448 In it is shown my attempt on displaying some of my collection in wall-mount displays.

Let me know if the pictures don't show and I'll add some here.

That's what I was afraid of.

So here's a wall (or table) mount frame. It's hinged and has a catch so it can be opened and closed. I want my awards to be detachable so I can remove them for inspection and then replace them in the display.

In the above image you can see one side of the Velcro tabs I use. One on the frame and the other on the award.

Very nice! A little different option from the normal compressed foam type display cases.

I've considered this but the medals I wish to hang have the long-ish ribbons. Not sure if velcro sticking to material will last long.

                      How 'bout this method?

                      Sorry I can't get better focus but the gist is there;
Ribbons mounted to the background, medals suspended over the ribbons from a push-pin above.

For my wound badges i too cut a sheet of felt to fit the case and then slit a hole length ways so the pin passes through ,this way the badge sits flat and the glass holds them firmly in Kevin.

                          Hi Wiking

Maybe you can try this "3 point" technique and see if it will do the trick for you...

It will allow you to frame medals without punching holes in your ribbons but it does imply that you fold the ribbons at the top to a certain extent so they can be secured to the mounting surface and that you use a rather rigid backing (like cardboard) behind the cloth backing

Step 1: Once ribbon is folded to desired lenght make 3 small marks on backing: 2 at top edges of ribbon and 1 centered on the medal ring

Step 2: Using a needle punch 3 small holes where the marks are.

Step 3: Using thread or very fine fishing line (which I prefer since its transparent) make a knot at one end and push needle in hole 1 from the back
and pass it through hole 2 on the front then to the back again and run it down to the lower hole (medal ring hole) and push out to the front again and leave it like that for now

Step 4: Insert folded part of ribbon behind thread (on front between holes 1 & 2 at top) then tighten thread to secure ribbon at top then re-inter hole 3 at medal loop to back to secure medal itself so it doesnt wobble around in the frame when you handle it and you dont have to press the medals against the glass to keep them in place which isnt always a good idea depending on local environment: I prefer to always leave an air space between the medal/badge and the glass just in case

You can repeat that "weaving pattern" horizontally or verticallly as often as you need within a frame using the same thread if the final components of the frame are known or repeat individual mounts if there may be changes or additions down the road

I hope it makes sens. I have attached a little drawing to help explain it better

                          Salut

I like the way you displayed the ribbons! I am going to give that a try myself.
