I don't know you but I hate to see people get burned. Many people say 'If he won't learn or refuses to learn, let it be a lesson to him'. This philosophy has merit that I often ascribe to, but please understand this is a fantasy item. You should seek a refund because once Walt has it back, I guarantee he will have it for a while. How much did you pay for it?

I believe in trusted dealers and experts who have been in this hobby the longest, it's experience that makes you an expert and extremely few people have the experience let alone the reputation as Mr. Wittmann. Seeing that he handled and examined the item firsthand, there's nothing to say that he is incorrect.

Steve,
Try to be objective here for a minute. You have heard numerous opinions regarding the seller from guys who probably have a combined 200+ years in the hobby. I am not going to add my personal opinions on said seller, but what I will say with 100% confidence is that he has been associated with some of the most dubious dealers in this hobby, and at the center of numerous transactions involving material that did not stand the test of originality.
This is not to say he doesn't have original material, nor to say he is not a reasonable (and knowledgeable) guy to talk to. I'm just trying to say that many of us have been first-hand witness to some of the antics and you are best advised to heed the warnings.
Regarding the vetting authority - these two go waaaaayyyyyy waaaaayyyyy back and are part of a cabal that does not serve the best interests of collectors, regardless of the videos and nice books.
There are stories that have been around for years of some of the things that went on with some in this generation of dealers that would make your hair stand-up and cause you to never look at an item you didn't get directly from a vet the same way again. And on the note of generation - don't ever equate years in the hobby with trust. Some will develop expertise, but not all will use that expertise for the good of the collecting community 100% of the time.
Regarding your object - you'd be best served to use the money spent on it towards something that will stand-up to scrutiny based on its merits and accepted design and/or production criteria. Collect what you like, but you should always be thinking about what the future holds for your collection and what you may be confronted with if/when you want to move a piece or two.
Good luck, good hunting, and be CAREFUL!

Wise words have been stated throughout this thread.
With respect to this piece, without hard/direct provenance there is NO WAY for ANYONE to state that this item was produced prior to May 1945. It could have been made in someone's garage in May 1995.
So in the end you have to be pleased with it and when it comes time to sell it the onus will be on you to show it is a pre May 45 produced piece.
As Waffenriech stated stick the known items.
