Hope there are some Wagner fans on the forum because i am and Hitler was.
The collection of items i would like to share with you are the result of 2 great interests i have: the Third Reich and Wagner.
Hitler organized, together with "Kraft durch Freude", warfestifals for wounded soldiers at Wagners theatre in Bayreuth, untill 1944.
The soldiers had to suffer, beside their wounds, 4 hours of Wagner while they really only wanted to get drunk in the nearby pubs.
Hitler was a close friend of the Wagner family and was even planning to mary Wagner’s daughter in law, Winifred, but chose for Germany.
A small explanation for a much bigger story, not easy for me to convey in English. At this time, the festival still excists, but with a very dark history.
So, my small collection relating to that era.
First, some program booklets of the festival
Regulations from Kraft durch Freude for the festival, entrance ticket booklet and a period photo of the entance of the city.
Some feldpost editions of Wagner pamflets.
An entrance ticket to the 1943 performance of "Die Meistersinger".
A flyer included in the programbook on what to do in case of an air-raid during the performance.
A 78 inch record and a programbook of the 1936 Bayreuth performance of "Lohengrin".
This performance was sponsored by Hitler personally to enhance his standing with the international community during the Bayreuth festival and the Olympics.
A jubilee eagle stamped edition of "Die Grundlagen des Neunzehnten Jahrhunderts" by Houston Stewart Chamberlain, Wagner’s son in law and cousin of Neville Chamberlain. Have also a first edition of it. And an autograph of him on a postcard.
A very racist book.
A first edition of "Das Judentum in der Musik" 1869, by the man himself. A pamflet, according to some, inspiring the holocaust.
To this day it is forbidden to perform Wagner in Israel.
A period postcard of Winifred Wagner, signed by her. The daughter in law of Wagner, intendant of the "Kriegsfestspiele" and almost married with Hitler.
A "Bayreuth Wagner Stadt" stamped envelope.
And finaly, that's me, on the entrance of the "Bayreuth Festspielhause" in the year 2000
