The picture speaks for itself. What is this? It's a pre-1940 game of some sort.

Yes, what you have there is a strategy game similar to chess, issued pre-war by the Wehrmacht called Wehrschach. They came in various manufactured models numbered 0 - 12, looking at the one pictured, you have 0 or 1 model came in at rectangular box (38cm x 20cm - which you don't show) most popular manufactured model 12 - board was folded into four and fitted into a 21 cm square box, fitted easily into a soldiers tornister. The differences between models 0 - 12 came from the various materials used plastic, glass, bakelite for the figures, also various luxury editions were made with figures having a felt covering on the bottom and other extras and lastly the different makers had different box designs.

Wehrschach, also called Tak-Tik, was designed by the Wehrmacht in 1938 or 1939.

The diagonal lines are supposed to be a road and a river. I think the lines crossing the 3rd and 9th row indicate walls and the two squares at the 5th and 7th rows are lakes that block all movement except for the planes.

It's a chess like game but instead of traditional King, Queen, Bishops, etc. you have Tanks, Planes, and Infantry. Like chess, the pieces can move vertical or horizontal a certain number of squares. I think the Tank can move similar to a Knight but it can't jump over other pieces. To capture an enemy piece you need to threaten it with two of your pieces instead of one like in chess.

I played this game a long time ago. If I can find the instructions I'll scan them into my computer and e-mail it to you. It looks like you have a very nice set!

Thanks guys, this game will be at Stow MA this year. The Collins Foundation has WWIi reenactment every Columbus day weekend. Translated instructions would be great, our goal it to be playing it that weekend. Please introduce yourself if you attend.
