Can you tell how can you achieve such sharp close-ups? I have a good camera with a good lens and the best my camera can do - even when on macro-focus setting is only this - still blurry details.. Do you use some tricks or special equipment when making extreme close-up shots? (and of course I use tripod and remote shutter release)

I also use a tripod and remote shutter release. That will avoid the natural shaking of our hands, even when a camera has stability-control or something like that.
When targeting an object, it's essential to hit the AF-FOCUS button so it focuses on one point on the object. In my early days, I tend to forget that and had blurry images as a result. Additionaly, I never use the zoom function when taking pictures. It gives me the best results so far. So with the macro-setting, objects are often a few millimeters away from the lens...

Looking forward to see Michaels reply and how he does the trick...

                  Hi !!
its just lens - i use Canon 40D (this camera has 1.6 crop) and 100mm 2.8 Canon macro lens. I know how good atelier You have Bnz - so You should just go Canon EOS 5D MarkII - full frame camera with set of lenses - cant go wrong with that. I willgo EOS 5 MarkII before summertime - now its brand new camera on the market and still a bit pricey - $2700 for body....

100 mm canon lens is very sharp and not so expensive - like $500-600, and with some additional rings You may get incredible macros !

here is the same picture (part of it) how it comes out of the camera:

Thanks! I got it - all I need is "Macro" lens . Always wondered why my scanner can pick-up better details than my "hi-end" camera.
                    P.S. wow, those are amazing close-ups !

One of my most favourite threads. This is my contribution. Sorry for my poor compact camera. Do need a DSLR.

One additional step you might try. At extreme close up range the depth of field is very shallow, you might want to try turning off the AF and use instead Manual Focus with a much smaller aperature setting f/8 or even smaller up to f/22. Since the camera is on a tripod you don't need to worry about camera shake, and you will get a greater depth of field increasing the sharpness of your shot. It will not have a "fall off" in sharpness away from your main focus point. May take longer to set up the shot, but the shot will be much sharper overall. Of course I usually don't do that! In fact I usually just shoot handheld even with my Micro lenses (same as Macro.......just that Nikon uses the name Micro)---just my laziness!!

I think that was a very good shot. Not a top-10 but not too far from there.
                            Keep up the good work.
                            Thanks,
