    Tom Wittman collection

    http://www.wwiidaggers.com/collectingroom.htm

I don't know if this has been posted before. Took a peek at Tom Wittman's collection on his website. Simply fabulous. As my late mother in law used to say when she liked something but was a little envious: What a vulgar display.

I was completely overwhelmed to see this gentleman's collection. Thank you so much for sharing his website, Sir.

        Thanks for posting the link

Ive seen his show journel youtube clips a few times and despite some members here slagging them i have always enjoyed them.

I knew the gentleman must have some sort of collection (i remember him buying a bronze sculpture of Alexander the great, i think) at a fair and saying it would look great on his bedside table, however i didnt realise his collection was that impressive.

          From Mr. Wittmanns first page|

"featured 1906 circa painting. It is artist signed, and depicts Otto von Bismarck as a Solingen blacksmith forging the symbolic sword of Germany. The Iron Chancellor offers the weapon to a figure reminiscent of the mythical Brьnnhilde, who is dressed in Prussian blue gown and Garde du Corps eagle-topped helmet. The painting suggests a rightfully glorious Germany lead by Teutonic warriors."

Sorry for being a bit picky but this painting does not have any relation to "Solingen". It does not show Brunhilde but Germania. Bismarck is the smith of the German Union and is presenting her the the sword of the Union. Nothing to do with "Teutonic warriors"
The original painting is from 1866 and this was a very famous and much copied scene.
I honor his very nice collection but I hope he describes his daggers a bit more accurate than this painting.

          Regards
          Christian

Christian,I guess if the painting was offered for sale on his site as an original then poeple would have an issue! Maybe he doesnt realise as its in his collecting room.I believe from things ive heard that he is a decent dealer but ive never bought from him myself.

One of the mega collections for sure. Lots of good examples but having viewed what he has tried to move through his site in the past as well as presently I am reminded of the old saying "all that glitters is not gold"

Apparently built his collection through the patronage of knuckle headed collectors.

I've been lucky enough to have seen Tom's collection, it's just awesome, give the man some credit! He is extremely proud of it, and should be!
There is know better navy collection in this country, not to mention, his swords and daggers, He is more than willing to let you handle and examine his life's work.
The hobby needs more people like Tom!

                    regards, Fletch

He truly has an amazing collection and its very well displayed. He asks a lot for his daggers, swords and other items, but that is his business. People are still buying from him regardless of the prices so good for him. He gets some great pieces and sometimes it comes down to spending a bit more to get an item you really want or spend years looking and hoping to find it at a deal. All that said, he has an outstanding collection build through time, effort and money. Matt

Would this be the figure you are referring to by any chance? I tried to find the photo of him holding this very same example but with a brass plate on the marble base with some SS awarding script inscribed on it.

Anyhow, I procured this about 31 years ago in an antique shop in Rudesheim, Germany. Cant say how old but anyone could have slapped on that metal award tag and presto you have a unique TR SS cultural artifact. Of course we are all aware these things were duplicated.

It would be appreciated if anyone could please find that image of T. Whittman holding this very identical statue again and post here. Nevertheless, thanks.
