Poor Man's Display--What Do You Think?

Hello my friends, I have seen some wonderful displays here over time, not just items, I am also referring to the cases and cabinets they are displayed in. Also, I have watched with great interest as those of you with wood working skills have built lovely display cabinets for you items.

Well, this Saturday afternoon, I decided to prove that you don't have to be a master craftsman in order to put together a working display, and you don't have to invest much money either. So here is what I did.

These old trunks came from a local fire department. When they get new SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Aparatus) Gear, it comes in these trunks. The trunks are put together surprisingly well. Nevertheless, most fire departments throw them out, so if you ask around you may be able to find some for free as I did.

The raised frame there is pieced together from pieces of scrap wood picked up from a construction site on base. If you find sites like these, just tell someone what you want to do and most people are helpful enough to find you some good stuff. For this project, it didn't matter what the wood looked like, whether or not it was colored, or even how good a job I did spacing out the pieces as long as it held the glass up from the top of the trunk.

Now, when the sheet goes over the top, obviously, it does not lay flush in the corners, and we can't have that because then all the medals and what not you put in there will lay at odd sloped angles. So, sticky tack available at WalMart does the trick for about $2. Just put it inside the wood frame at the inside edges, and press the sheet down for a snug fit.

Now believe it or not, there are alot of medals and stuff stored in this box that have been needing a new home.

Now just arrange your stuff in a pleasing fashion and put the glass over it. The glass pane by the way also comes from a construction site. I think it and another piece I got for free were cut incorrectly. So if you scrounge a bit you can find all sorts of useful materials.

Last one. It is not the most beautiful display ever, but for about $12 altogether, it keeps the dust out, you can see your stuff, and when it is time to move, the medals can be packed up and transported in the trunks

Here is one that I put together using the same methods, except without the raised frame since this is for flat items.

I hope that some of these ideas and methods can help someone, and if you decide to piggy back and come up with a bigger and better Poor Man's Display, please share you thoughts, suggestions, and inspirations so that the rest of us poor folks out there can spend our money on Iron Crosses and medals rather than on expensive display cases for them.

I like it very much - a nice "clean" display

                          Looks very contemporary actually.

Modern Art galleries pay $1000s for stuff like that.

                              Hey Chris,

Great idea. I like it. And those old trunks are great. I remember my folks had them. I didn't know they still made them.

It's apparent from these photos, you collect more than EK's. Some interesting pieces you have spread out there.
