Bill D As discussed in the uniforms forum - here is one of my cutlery cases that I have restored as best I can to display my awards in for both family and friends.
Nice to hear from you. Well the shoulder boards and collar tabs are now in the mail from Germany (hopefully) .Mike K actually put me on to the idea of using old cutlery sets to display your awards in. So Mike has to take all the credit for this one .
I had the fortune to be able to visit Mike and view his awesome display of awards that he has obviously been collecting for some time, so for a new collector whom is trying to gain as much knowledge and exposure as possible the experience of chatting with Mike and viewing his collection was in my perspective priceless ( thanks once again Mike for your time and patience, cant wait to do it again).
Mike suggested looking around at old second hand furniture stores for old and unloved cutlery sets, I actually managed to find two on my first day after making a few phone calls, and at very cheap prices. I stripped the old cutlery cases, sanded them back as far as I dare, put layer after layer of shalak on both the external and internal cases, then lined the interior with cardboard covered velveteen. It took about half a day to strip each one and about two to apply the many layers of shalak.
Now all I am waiting on are the shoulder boards & collar tabs. I also have to pick up a bullion cloth breast eagle to add to my collection, and then hopefully it will be OK for display, until you all tell me that it is incomplete and there is more that I need to add to it. If you like I can post a few pics of the case, I can post pics of what I have internally as far as awards go, but do not think it would do my little collection justice until it is complete with the boards tabs and breast eagle, but you let me know Bill and I would be more than happy to show you all how it is going.
Again hope all is well in your part of the world.
PS: I will take a few shots in the morning and post them for you Bill, its getting dark and the lighting inside is not the best, very soft. I also apolagise about the photo's quality, one of those things.
