Mannequin #17: Drillichanzug

The enlisted man Drillichanzug (fatigue outfit) consisted of a jacket with standing collar (Drillichjacke) and pants (Drillichhose), both starting out life as grey twill, but after being washed several times, ending up white. The pictured outfit's drastically faded color is typical among surviving fatigue outfits and the reason field-grey test examples were created even before World War One began. Note the shorter jacket length compared to the NCO Drillichrock shown before. Buttons are also different, being dished metal or zinc instead of the NCO's polished Tombak or nickel buttons. This Prussian "Infantryman" is ready for a full day of labor in his Drillichanzug, complete with Model 1909 ammunition pouches mounted on his leather belt (Leibriemen) and backpack. Just in case an enemy poison gas attack should occur while working, this "soldier" has his gas mask handy in its 1916 carrying can.

Mannequin #18: Drillichanzug with Patronentragegurte

This German soldier impression is wearing his drill tunic over a field-grey Model 1915 Bluse, a practice sometimes followed to protect the uniform. He is "ready" for combat and is armed with a Kar98, three stick hand grenades and a private purchase trench knife. He carries two cloth bandoliers, one of which still contains all twenty clips and cartridges originally sewn into the compartments during the War .



The company ammunition wagon usually transported 224 belts, one for each man in a company. Troops moving into position (Stellung) from rear areas were supposed to carry at least one bandolier like this to increase the stockpile of ammunition in the trenches. Multiply this by thousands of men coming and going and one can see how much extra effort by supply troops this saved in moving ammunition to the Front.

Mannequin #19 : The Daunenmantel

The Daunenmantel was a special overcoat introduced in 1914 as an emergency measure to protect the soldiers during the first winter of the War. The coat reached well below the knees and was heavily padded with duck down sewn inside square "pockets". It was cut wide enough to be worn over the normal wool overcoat (Mantel) and belt equipment, such as ammunition pouches and the bayonet.

This surviving Daunenmantel made in Württemberg is marked "DAUNENMANTEL n. PURITAS ", "D.R.G.m.an. Straus & Co. UNTERTÜRKHEIM (WÜRTT.)"

Thanks ! The next one I do like very much. While WW2 fur overcoats are often seen (usually in bad condition as the coats deteriorate over time), finding a WW1 example is extremely scarce. This was in fact, the only fur overcoat I found in 22 years of collecting and I picked it up last year. Its nicely marked with BA clothing depot stamps.

Mannequin #20 : The Fur Overcoat (Pelzmantel)

Warm fleece and fur overcoats (Pelzmäntel) needed to be purchased on the open market because no Army regulations existed for such garments until late in the War. Consequently, many styles are seen in period photographs.

A mannequin torso in a modern collection models a white fleece overcoat with a dark fur collar. This particular coat was purchased by the Army in the private sector and then issued in 1915. Several similar versions of this fur coat with a dark collar can also be seen in the our upcoming book.

Mannequin #21 : The Abreissschild für die Eierhandgranaten

A squarish egg grenade wire puller plate was used to pull the wire loop of the igniter (Abreissschild für die Eierhandgranaten). This was a battle field relic find. The German verb abreissen means "to tear loose" and Schild translates to shield or plate. This flat steel plate is secured to the belt by two short leather straps, while a longer strap drapes around the soldier's neck.

This plate allowed several egg grenades to be carried at once. Pulling one from the shield in combat also removed the activating wire to the grenade's fuse, making it "live" and saving an operational step for the soldier, besides freeing up his other hand.
