there really are some truly amazing mannequins on display here.
I am probably in a minority, but I prefer mannequins without facial features. I got this one from Proportion in London (http://www.proportionlondon.com/). The head is rotatable and the arms and hands are articulated. This mannequin is wearing a tunic and cap that belonged to Hauptmann Franz-Alfred Wooge, 20th Panzerjager-Abteilung 20 (medals and kit added by me), that I bought from PvL last year (thanks Peter).

I like that set-up Macleod. Would prefer a full mannequin but I like the faceless and articulated model. More of a museum approach.Comment

yes, I like the anonymous look on this mannequin. Most of the mannequins available over here (that is, those that are affordable) have that odd male model look about them and I think this affects the impact of the uniform/cap/equipment on show (IMO).
However, if I could get my hands on some of the mannequins shown here, I'm sure I'd change my mind...

Thanks for the link to the proportion website. I know what you mean about the faceless type. Just checked website out - they look good. Can't find a price list though. Was your mannequin expensive?
Display is all important and the faceless mannequins are a good compromise if you live with someone who does not allow the sort with 'creepy faces'!!

yes, the mannequin was a little expensive. It cost around 500 GBP. There are quite a few options available and so the cost can be higher or lower, depending on what you want. For example, the articulated hands were an expensive option, and I'm not 100% convinced about them. This mannequin has a small chest size (37" I think), and so can pretty much wear most of the tunics I have. I like the fact I can move the arms around and rotate the head.
I don't know how expensive the mannequins shown in Thierry's museum were - they look really amazing and so must be quite expensive - and they clearly require artistic ablility to get that facial look.
And yes, I'm sure my wife is happier with the featureless aspect. If I had a room full of shop mannequins, there may be some questions about my sexuality

Thanks for that. I thought they might be costly, judging by the website. You have to balance the cost of display with collecting funds, and £500 would buy a nice addition to the collection of course.
A few years ago I purchased a full size mannequin from War and Peace show, but it was unstable and kept falling over, which was quite dangerous, and I got too much grief about it! Ended up throwing it out...expensive mistake.
I tend to stick to half mannequins to display uniforms, but when I see the quality display in this thread I begin to think...
Agree Thierry's display mannequins are brilliant...very impressed.

Here are some mannequins (Hindsgaul bases) customized for a friend of mine representing Normandy 44 characters and each of them have cost less than 500€, base & custom included (undressed of course as some of them wear 10 to 40 times more value of uniforms and equipment!)...Means that customized mannequins investment is around 10% to 20% of the total but they made 50% of the final look! (imho)...At contrary, if these superb uniforms had been presented on common shop mannequins the result would have been "ordinary" or even could interfere them...
In fact the main problem is the lack of "right" mannequins for militaria/historical display and even the vintage bases I'm talking about are not perfect because often too tall and with "pretty" faces not really adapted for soldiers (even if customization helps a lot to given them "combat look")...it's why, in addition of the custom service I offer, i'm now working on a brand new line of quality mannequins especially adapted to militaria (small/thin size, realistic & expressive face, removable feet & articulated arms)...will issued next march/april 2014!

now that is interesting news. I think you may find yourself becoming very busy next year. It is not easy to find mannequins that are small enough to wear some tunics (my smallest has a chest size of 90 cm...). I will certainly be contacting you once you are ready to receive orders

I can only vouch for the same. Good mannequins make or break a display. I've painted about 75 - 125 mannequins in the last 4 years and I've got another batch of 10 in my student flat right now. Getting a good base is important, but that's only 25% of the mannequin. If a mannequin is scratched up it will take away the attention of the display. Basicly what a customised mannequin should do is to take away the contrast between the mannequin and the uniform. Next to that the specific lighting should be taken into account.
I'm curious about the new line of mannequins by Thierry, can you give us any sneak peaks?
In the Netherlands I can find descent mannequins but they quickly cost between 150-200 euro's. But that's a plain mannequin! A lot of collectors come to me with worn, used (and sometimes abused) mannequins to get a new fresh look.
I try to always have some vintage mannequins in stock but most of them are allready stuck in collections and in need of a refurbrishment. It is my way to pay for my housing costs as a student.
