Being on a budget, and not having the money to spend, like some of us, I decided to restrict my collection to two main limitations. I decided that my collection would not fill more than four of my bookshelves and not cost me over Two thousand dollars. After buying the more expensive items, such as the helmets and bayonets, I decided to add a third restriction of not spending more than fifty dollars on any one item. This meant that I could not buy certain items that I would have liked, such as a German gas mask, so I had to find alternatives in the form of less expensive items that would still represent important equipment items related specifically to what was needed and used by the common soldier in WW1.
(The common soldier is always my priority in collecting. Things connected to ranks beyond, say, Captain or field grade, have little interest to me, and the common infantry soldier - the grunt- is what I'm most interested it. This can include artillery, signal, etc, but mostly Infantry, Konigin Aller Waffen, is what I like.)
So, here is, what I hope, will be the final completion :-) of my WW1 collection. Oh, I do have one British tank badge coming from England, to top it all off.
As you can see, I've concentrated on German, French, American and British items, with a touch of Belgium, Russia, and Austria. I'm also allowing the gas mask and Brodie helmet to double for the US and Britain, since they are so much alike. The same goes for the British bayonet, which is so much like the US one. And the French shovel and American gas mask represent all trench shovels and gas masks used in WW1. As do the French wire cutters.
So, here it is. I know that none of you believes that I'm finished with this. I'm not sure if I do myself. We all know that it's an addiction.
Oh, and what is not shown are my postcards (In the book shown) or my newspapers, and stereoscope cards! Sheesh!!!
