    Ich hatt' einen Kameraden..

I collect everything that is related to the poem/song:"Ich hatt' einen Kameraden.." and i would like to share my passion here.

My main collection consists of Ansichtskarten but i also got a few other items i will display later on.

    Information about the poem:
The poem was written in 1809 by the German poet Ludwig Uhland, his inspiration to write this poem came from the Tyrolian freedom fighters and their struggle against Napoleon.

In 1825 a composer by the name Friedrich Silcher made a song of Ludwig Uhland 's poem with an old folk melody:"Ein schwarzbraunes Mädchen hat ein'n Feldjäger lieb".

    The lyrics of the song:

    Ich hatt' einen Kameraden,
    Einen bessern find'st du nicht,
    Die Trommel schlug zum Streite,
    Er ging an meiner Seite
    In gleichem Schritt und Tritt.

    Eine Kugel kam geflogen,
Gilt es mir oder gilt es dir?
    Ihn hat es weggerissen,
Er liegt mir vor den Füßen,
Als wär's ein Stück von mir.

Will mir die Hand noch reichen,
    Derweil ich eben lad'.
Kann dir die Hand nicht geben,
    Bleib du im ew'gen Leben
    Mein guter Kamerad.

Even until this day the song is of great value at military, fire brigade and other type of funerals(occasionally civilian funerals) in Germany, Austria and other countries.

          Kriegerdenkmal in Kleve:

I recently visited this monument and as you can imagine it was a very special day for me. The monument is located in the graveyard at the Merowingerstraße and is situated on a hilltop that gives a beautiful view on to Kleve.
Sadly the monument looks currently a lot less appealing, the bushes shaped in an Eiserne Kreuz were gone, no Ivy or nice flowers but only some simple bushes.

There was a gentleman who neatly raked the gravel at the site, which means the monument is not forgotten.

When i saw this card for sale i wanted to have it without knowing it had the theme on it's backside(was not displayed). I was very pleasantly surprised when i got hold of the card and read it's backside!

The following card was established by the Verdun Battle Memorial museum, the exact date it was published is unknown.

I translated the poem on babelfish from German into English. I dont know how accurate it was of a translation but I liked it. Sad tho obviously.

There are many translations, Dutch, English, French and more but the German version will always be the one that is the dearest to me.

Have a look here for many translations:click.

The same could be said of almost any militaria collection. Collecting postcards mostly from WWI seems to me to be a lot more acceptable than collecting SS insignia, etc.
