                  I still pick up German Military religious items. So my focus isn't just US chaplain items.

                      Good question.
                      The care for soldiers and civilians was exemplified by Saint Martin of Tours. Saint Martin was a soldier during the late 4<SUP>th</SUP> century. He gave his cape (capellanus in Latin) to a poor beggar. It was this capellanus where we get the word Chaplain.

                              Here is the first AF Chaplain manual. The date for the manual is 1954. The author was a former Army Air Force Chaplain who helped write much of the Army Chaplain doctrine. I also have the 1956 AF Manual. The cover is exactly the same.
