    German 1864-71 (-18) collection

    Hello - my name's Chris and I have been collecting for 30 years. In the last 15 years my emphasis has been on German militaria from the 1864-71 period, particularly pieces from the smaller German states. My interest in military history prompted me to do my grad work at Purdue, where I studied Hannover - which partially explains why I've got so much Hannoverian stuff (my favorite place in the world is the Bohmann Museum in Celle).

    I'm hoping to find other collectors of the period to share information and photos with, since we usually only seem to encounter one another when we're bidding on ebay. Ultimately I'd hope to work together to create some sort of reference point for other collectors of the period.

    All of the pieces on the right side of the picture are Hannoverian, including the swords, though there's a Bavarian Podeweils hiding in there too.

      This is mostly headgear from the 1866 period - my "favorite" war, if you will, since pretty much everyone involved was German.

        This is the "victors' corner" - Prussian and Brunswick infantry uniforms from 1870-1880. While the prussian tunic could have come from almost anytime between 1871-1918, all the gear is originial, including the belt with integral bayonet frog. Most of my period cartrige pouches are regimentally marked and dated - I love German stuff because of that.

          And then there's the colonial and naval stuff which I started collecting more recently (when I couldn't find any 1864-70 stuff and my OCD kicked in). Ideally I'd like to find another collector interested in trading more early German stuff for these colonial pieces. I've also got a few "doubles" in the 1864-70 stuff which I'd like to swap for pieces that fit better.

              My Austrian Navy stuff, on the other hand, I love. I didn't know Austria had even HAD a navy before I visited the army museum in Vienna in the 80s.

                And then the collection transitions from Imperial Navy into Reichsmarine / Reichswehr / WWI. Several of these pieces are repros.

                  The Reichswehr tunic on the left has 1920s issue markings, though it's been through a theatre company or two as well. The Reichswehr cap is also dated. The helmet and side cap are a couple of WWII Hungarian things I've got.

                    The bottom 4 swords are Reichswehr or WWI reissue, one marked to a Reiter Regiment. One of the navy swords is dated and arsenal marked.

                          Realize I never uploaded the pictures of the Reichswehr sword. I also mis-typed with the Hungarian stuff, it's clearly WWII or interwar. I think the MG is probably a later Czech or Hungarian reissue too.
