    Colonel Roger Donlon Collection

    Greetings All,

    I wanted to share with you a very special grouping of items that I have pulled together.

    The West Point Cadet uniform belonged to and was worn by Roger H.C. Donlon when he attended the academy there. Colonel Donlon is significant because not only is he a Medal of honor recipient, but he is the first person to earn the Medal of Honor in the Vietnam War and the first person in the history of the United States Special Forces to earn the Medal of Honor.

    After acquiring his West Point uniform--which came with a letter of provenance from Colonel Donlon stating that it is his--along with ownership tags and so forth, I have sought out other things to add to the group.

    I plan to put these items on display soon at the Dallas County Museum where I am curator when I can work out some space issues and arrange for a dedicated area because of the uniqueness of this set.

        In October 1965 Captain Donlon was featured on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post. I was able to find two very good looking copies of that edition of the magazine. One I have framed.

            That's all that I have for now. I located a signed copy of one of Colonel Donlon's books and have purchased it, so will be adding it to the collection when it arrives.

            If anyone has anything else related to this set, I would be very happy to hear from you.

              Fascinating set. I've always liked those old West Point tunics. How did you obtain the tunic - from a collector or from Colonel Donlon?

                It was sold on the Estand. I've recently had the VA do a full overhaul of my right shoulder and when I came home and was able to get back onto the Forum, I found it there.

                  That is his plebe or freshman tunic. I believe his name, cadet serial number and company should be written somewhere on it, or possibly on the cuffs or neck attachment. If so, does it indicate what company he was in. The company would be a letter between A and M and followed by either a 1 or 2. Thanks...cy

                    I remember reading about him back in the mid 80s... I was really impressed, I think it was an old "Gung Ho" edition about USSF.
