    Hey,

Great collection. I was wondering if the any of the 1957 KC's are MM and if so what those MM's are.....is the 1939 KC MM as well?

    Thanks.

      Thanks!

None of the KCs are maker marked but they are all marked 800 for silver content only. The '57s have two distinct styles of the Oakleaf sprig. The 57 KC w/oaks and swords has the earlier design sprig while the other two are of the second type.

        Thank you.
It could be yours. How deep are your pockets?

          VERY VERY IMPRESSIVE

I especially like the imperial display with all the variants. The grand cross
is great!! I think I read somewhere that there were only 5 actually awarded.
Is that true? Were there only 5 made or did some of the recipients get
          duplicates?

          What a great collection

Thanks for the info....I take it they are the early type of 1957 RK?

              Thanks, Greg.

There were four GC awarded and the fifth one that the Kaiser wore was at the request of the General Staff. Four of the five are still in existance. General Ludendorff's was destroyed in an air raid during the second world war. It's possible that some recipients had duplicate decorations but only one award piece.

There's speculation as to how many GC were actually made. Some were used for museum and patriotic displays. The figure centers somewhere around 100 examples. Again this is speculation as even the unawarded examples or " display copies" are rare.

These '57 KCs are the higher quality 800 marked pieces of earlier construction. The one with the Oaks and Swords has the first type of core design. When exactly these were produced is hard to pin point. The quality suggests that they were made early on in the production and are not the chintzy pieces made for the collector market. I bought these from a collector who was with the US Army stationed in West Germany where he acquired these during the '70s. The provenance that I have on these only goes back to that point. I was never able to establish who the original owners were.

                      Paul and Gerd,

                      Thanks for the nice comments!

How long did it take? It seems like a lifetime!

Kidding aside I started this wonderful obsession with the Iron Cross series way back in 1966. My first purchase was a cased 39 EK I that I bought at a local coin and collectables shop for a whooping $6.00. From there it was a slow and pleasurable slide into collector madness! Unfortunately there's no escape! I've been diagnosed as terminally EKed! The good part is that collector madness is right next door to heaven!

So the moral of this story is to start early, keep your eyes open and your wallet and bank account very thin and you too can get to EK heaven.

                      Best regards,

                      Tony

P.S. There's another third or so more of 1914s, cased crosses and EK related pins and enamel badges that I haven't gotten around to photographing. Yet. It's madness I tell you! Madness!

Great collection, but surprised to see no CCCs.

                              Tom and Skippy,

Thanks for the kind words. Sorry I missed them the first time around and this thread slipped out of view. I thought of bringing it up for Biro to compare his new 1813.

No CCCs because the few I had I sold to buy more EKs!
