    My Handmade Helmet Stands

    Hi:
    I'm a carpenter/cabinet maker for almost 50 years. I've been collecting about that long too. I built these out of any darn thing I got left over in my shop.
    This one's of pine. I measure the inside of the hat to get an idea about the size of the top part. They stand about 10" tall when finished. Just glued and clamped together.
    Here are some with some of my lids on them.
    Here's one I fixed up on a manequin for my artillery captain.

          Hi John,

          They look really nice the stand.
          Also nice collection of what I can see

          I would maybe cover the top of the stands with ( not sure if this is the right name ) felt to make sure you dont damage the inside of the visor and other headgear.

              Hi,

              Nice collection and good hat stands. On the ones I made, the helmet`s weight doesn`t rest on the liner when put on the stand. I have the stand directly in contact with the steel to keep the leather in a better condition.

                      Hi there,

                      Well here is the one I made for my helmets. As mentioned before the weight of the helmet is not supported by the leather liner, but by the helmet shell it self. Although the liner is held up by a little piece of wooden support, to not allow it to bend down. The helmet sits on it very very stable. I personaly be worried if the helmets weight is supported by the liner, hence these are not new and I wouldn`t be happy if by time they get damaged.

                          Yeah, I was wondering how small the top had to be where it went through the drawstring. And how could it be stable if it had to fit through the tiny space through the drawstring. I see how you accomplished the stability with the ring that touches the liner just below the drawstring. Is that part adjustable up or down the post? A tight fit would make this possible and each stand could adapt to different lids.
                          I like it and I think I can adapt mine with a short peg on the very top with the padding. Thanks, Les.... John

                            My drawing is maybe not that correct, im sorry. Its a bit bigger then that so it could be stable without the liner support, but then the leather just hangs in the air and may fold down if there is no liner support. If you want to make it adjustable you can, I just glued it on for the distance i wanted it to be. When I put the helmet on, I have the liner-drawstring as lose as possible, the padded part is about 3cm x 5cm so it has to be put through that part, but because the pole is just maybe 1.5cm in diameter it goes through very easy. Its very easy to make, and I think on the longer term it keeps your leather in a better shape.
