    Chest Eagles

    Hello,

Have several chest eagles taken from a display and
unfortunately they have a light cardboard backing.
All are intact and in good condition.

Does the cardboard decrease collectors' interest or
    the market value?

    Thanks in advance for advice.

Are you talking about the pieces having once been glued into a scrap book and then being removed, leaving remains of the paper on the back?

      Sarge,

The eagles had been a group display and were mounted on light cardboard stock, about the thickness of the backing on an 8.5 X 11 inch ruled pad. They were removed individually by cutting around each eagle leaving the cardboard on the insignia back.

        Sarge,

The eagles have been glued to the cardboard.

        Thanks.

Okay. Basically, any change in an item from its original condition will have a negative impact on price. I've seen a lot of insignia over the years that has spots of heavy paper (usually black) stuck to the back. In the case of yours it will depend on how much of the cardboard can be removed. If the glue was applied in only a couple places, most of the paper can just be torn away. If, however, the entire back was covered in glue before putting it on the cardboard that will have a more significant impact.

It also depends on who the buyer is, of course, and how he plans to use the eagle. Some collectors demand near mint condition, some like only well used, and some only collect insignia with pieces of the uniform still attached. And there are a lot if us that bloody don't care and will pretty much buy anything as long as it's original.

So I guess the short answer (too late for that now though, isn't it ) is that yes, it will deter some and make a slight reduction in value - but nothing serious.

          That's my opinion, any way.
