Travel in Renault Clio

Hang on guys sorry to show my ignorance here but.... Dunlop produced tyres for British armoured Vehicles during WW2 why would a German tank have Dunlop rubber on it?

What about european factories, rubber was precious so any captured would be put to good use?

In 1900 the company started production of tyres for motor cars. The company continued its expansion, and in 1918 production started at the new plant at Fort Dunlop, Birmingham. By 1920 the company had selling subsidiaries or branches in South Africa, South America, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Spain and India, manufacturing operations in France, Japan and the USA, and rubber plantations in Malaya and Ceylon.(from wikipedia).

Hi Chris thats what i thought German production in a captured factory which bears out in the company history Para 382/383 are pretty interesting in the following link,

But i cant see them producing tyres under the Dunlop name it would have surely been pretty unpatriotic for a start. I can find loads of information about Dunlop marked tyres on British armour and planes but not one reference to Dunlop tyres on german WW2 armour or aircraft.

DUNLOP manufacturer make rubber for other german vehicles. I send you two examples of road wheels for Maultier and Sd.Kfz. 251 (Rudi Schoeter collection).







The german manufaturer code for DUNLOP is mwu. The Jagdpanzer IV of Ft Knox have a lot of road wheel with this code. Here a other example of a Panzer IV road wheel.

DUNLOP is perhaps since OPEL, a foreign manufacturer with factory in deutchland who required to product for the armies of the Reich.

Hi Arquille now that is some very very interesting information many thanks for posting those examples, Interesting to see Dunlop produced for both the Allies and Axis forces during WW2.

British tyres in German use

Rubber rims for panzerwheels were newly fabricated by many companies, but only one British make Dunlop

The Germans also used a lot of british treadpattern standard truck tyres as well. But these were also taken as warbooty from stocks that were confiscated during the conquest of the early waryears in Europe and Russia ( lend lease )

we find Scammel truck type tyres on Famo sd ah 115 panzertrailers, even the 8 wheelers like Puma's were found with UK tyres.
