    My MG-34 Display

    Greetings Gents,

Well, my MG-34 arrived today and after a bit of head scratching, everything eventually came right together. Naturally, I've had nothing to do all week long, so I've been at the post office at 8am wanting this thing to arrive, but it hasn't been here. However, today, I had to have an MRI on my busted knee at the VA hospital, so it came in and I had to wait to put the MG together until I got home. That meant that I could not play around with display ideas until well into the evening either.

After taking time for assembly, I had only about an hour to put this together, so I know that many parts of this display are not accurate to the time period. However, I did not want to just put the MG on the floor and leave it at that. So, I got in my woodshop and cut some simple plywood (again not period, but for the time I had to spend this evening, it will have to do). Next, I drove down to a demolished Beer Hall from the 1950's (again not WWII period, but pretty close) and collected some material. Then I went through my shell casings that I had collected in my reload bag in the gun closet and scattered some large casings under the ejection port. Naturally, if you look close enough in the display, you will find that none of these will actually feed through the MG-34 but are a mixture of different calibers. Nevertheless, at first glance, their presence does give the impression that some action has taken place.

Over time, I do plan to correct the historical problems, so please do be gentle with them. In fact, there is a town near here with an abandoned WWII era grocery store. I know how to get in touch with the owner and intend to see if it is possible to get permission to go in and salvage a portion of the hardwood flooring to replace this plywood or perhaps simply lay on top of it sometime in the very near future. Anyway, like I said, I threw this together in about an hour, so it isn't as nice as it would have been had I been able to plan it out a bit, so give me some time to think and refine and maybe it will look better, but the gun is still nice.

    Enjoy the pics.

    Best,

    Chris

I'm not sure where this looks most like. I'm thinking of getting a black picture frame, putting in one of those B&W propaganda shots of Hitler that were in many German houses then crushing the glass in the frame and putting it on the floor underneath some of the shell casings. What do yall think?

I'd also like to place a pack of cigarettes and maybe a loose one on top of the bricks. Does anyone have any German ones or even an empty pack or know where to get them?

Any other suggestions you guys have to improve this display are very welcome. Again as you can tell, this was thrown together in a mighty hurry this evening.

Last picture. I think that the MG-34 on this side of the room nicely compliments the US civil war cannon on the other side of the room.

Give a man an opinion and you feed him for a day,
teach a man to use the "search" function on the WAF and you feed him for a lifetime.

She said to tell you that she appreciates the compliment. The agreement is that she gets to spend money on travel as often as she can spare the time and we can afford the money and I don't hold her back on that any more than I have to--and I manage our household finances so I know what we can and cannot afford--and I get to have whatever I want for my collection provided that (1) we can afford it and (2) it will fit in this room...hence when I decided to buy a cannon, I bought an 1841 mountain howitzer instead of a piece of siege artillery. So I agree, I do have a much more understanding spouse than some in our hobby and I remind her often of how much I appreciate her; I think that that goes quite a long way toward KEEPING her in a state of being so understanding and indulgent.

To bad Marc. As long as it can fit on the side of the house or in the garage, I am golden! I just have to locate an 88 now.

As for the MG-34, that would look nice in my future room! Nice Pickup!

                      I once flew in a B-17, B-24, & a B-25. Next, I want to fire an 88 round.
