Greetings Gents,
Well, my MG-34 arrived today and after a bit of head scratching, everything eventually came right together. Naturally, I've had nothing to do all week long, so I've been at the post office at 8am wanting this thing to arrive, but it hasn't been here. However, today, I had to have an MRI on my busted knee at the VA hospital, so it came in and I had to wait to put the MG together until I got home. That meant that I could not play around with display ideas until well into the evening either.
After taking time for assembly, I had only about an hour to put this together, so I know that many parts of this display are not accurate to the time period. However, I did not want to just put the MG on the floor and leave it at that. So, I got in my woodshop and cut some simple plywood (again not period, but for the time I had to spend this evening, it will have to do). Next, I drove down to a demolished Beer Hall from the 1950's (again not WWII period, but pretty close) and collected some material. Then I went through my shell casings that I had collected in my reload bag in the gun closet and scattered some large casings under the ejection port. Naturally, if you look close enough in the display, you will find that none of these will actually feed through the MG-34 but are a mixture of different calibers. Nevertheless, at first glance, their presence does give the impression that some action has taken place.
Over time, I do plan to correct the historical problems, so please do be gentle with them. In fact, there is a town near here with an abandoned WWII era grocery store. I know how to get in touch with the owner and intend to see if it is possible to get permission to go in and salvage a portion of the hardwood flooring to replace this plywood or perhaps simply lay on top of it sometime in the very near future. Anyway, like I said, I threw this together in about an hour, so it isn't as nice as it would have been had I been able to plan it out a bit, so give me some time to think and refine and maybe it will look better, but the gun is still nice.
Enjoy the pics.
Best,
Chris
