    I only realized today that this thread has resurfaced again. Thanks to all for your comments.

    William, I think both would be correct. Here's a scan from one of my books showing a member of Sturmbataillon Rohr at the end of 1916. This was one of the inspirations for my set-up. I've seen many pictures of infantry, especially Stosstruppen, wearing the Y straps, and I think they were more comfortable and distributed the weight more evenly than the bread bag straps.

      One more picture showing a close-up of a Sturmkompanie training on an obstacle course at the beginning of 1918. It might not be clear at first due to the weapons and equipment worn, but most are wearing Y straps. It's interesting that no gas mask carriers of any type are evident.

            Hans great photos. I knew Y straps were used but I did not know the extent. Y straps seem to mark the most difference between WW1 and WWII.

            Didn't the Stormtroops borrow the y straps from the Cavary?
