I have wrestled for years with various ways to display visor caps. I have tried the glass heads and they have been quite satisfactory but heavy and take up space vertically. You have to have a fairly large cabinet for them.
Some months ago, Skipper Greenwade showed us, in a thread, about a new hat stand he has devised. What I liked about it is the hat is not supported at the top -- but rather around the sweatband as it naturally should be. I have hat stands here where the hat rested on the top sweatshield and I never liked this -- and always lived in fear of cracking the fragile celluloid.
These forms work very well. Keep in mind, the turnbuckles are quite powerful and you have to carefully adjust the form so as not to put too much pressure on the sweatband. This can result in cracking -- especially sweatbands which have shrunk along the top edge due to aging.
These comes in various colors and sizes. I chose black because it is unobtrusive and doesn't take away from the display. I have a couple of different height stands -- which Skip makes -- because of restrictions on room in the cabinet.
If you order, the forms themselves come in two different sizes. I would estimate that the normal form will not work on hats smaller than a size 57 or less. Maybe a 56. But Skip makes a smaller size form for the pinhead hats as well -- his experience with FJ helmets taught him this as they seem to all be in small sizes (brain sizes of men who jump out of perfectly good airplanes must be an issue).
Anyway, Skip is a WAF member -- and actually goes by his full and real name here (what a concept). PM if you are interested and he can give you pricing and shipping details. The man is a woodworking genius -- he also makes beautiful display stands for daggers. You have probably seen them at SOS and MAX.
Best regards,
Mike
