My Bunker is is flooded !!!

Imagine coming home after a hard days work and open the front
door to your house to the sound of running water !!!
......Panic...... I ran downstairs to find 2 inches deep of water
in the entire basement My bunker !!! Yes 2"
deep also. A broken water pipe, I turned off the water valve
and surveyed the damage. Lucky for me all of my collection
and books were high enough to avoid getting wet. So I got
to work with the Wet Vac and 200 gallons later had most of the water outside. Now my entire room full of years of collecting had to be removed for storage upstairs to avoid moisture damage. I was fortunate enough to only lose my desk, a couple of bookshelves and the carpet in the entire basement. I will now look into collectors insurance more seriously as that was a close shave !! I am going to miss my displays for the couple of weeks I need to rebuild

Boy, that was a close call!
I'm glad to here there was no major loss for you.

I've been considering collectors insurance & after hearing your story, I'm definitely going to get some.

Most of my high dollar items are in the safety deposit box, but I couldn't stand losing anything, especially my library!
      Regards,
      Chris

Always interested in buying Ribbon Bars or anything Ribbon Bar related!!

          Fellow "Bunker" Occupier!

Heartfelt sympathies! But you'll get it fixed I'm sure, and take steps in construction to keep it from happening again.

          I did.

The previous incarnation of my own Bunker suffered a little flooding from the same sort of thing (busted pipe), but as with you, the incident was rather a good lesson for the future than an unmitigated disaster.

Sounds like we were both lucky, in a sense. My situation could have been much, much worse, as I am sure yours could have been. The silver lining for me was "lesson learned", and a strong motivation to effect some prevention from not only water, but other depredations as well.

Good luck with the reconstruction, and I send you my best and heartiest moral support from "Der Bunker". Drop me a PM when you are done. I'd like to send a small "Bunker-warming gift" to commemorate the re-opening.

            Say, Charles...

I just remembered you are in Maryland... Is it possible your "busted pipe" has any relation to the recent news about the huge (much more than usual, and all simultaneous) rash of "pinhole" leaks in copper pipes across some counties in Maryland (PG and Montgomery I think)?

Something in the water is eating away copper pipes up there... it's in the news; are you aware of the story?

            Just a thought.

Thanks for the kind words Ralph and all, It was truly a wake up
call. It made me realize that disaster could strike. I really want
to get a security system as the old neighborhood isnt quite
what it used to be. In the last 2 years my truck was broken into
and the crooks liberated my kids travel TV and videos also my 2 boys brand new bikes were stolen out of the backyard right next to the basement door. Nothing makes you want to commit bodily
harm to people than when they steal your childrens stuff !!
You would just love to catch them and have a handgun that will
              remove whole limbs per shot.

Ralph, I will invite you down for the ceremony !!!
I have a townhouse I rent out that had a pinhole leak last year.
I have heard the story and it is getting to be quite a problem around here. Mine was a break where the the 1/4 " icemaker
line connected to the copper water pipe. it was amazing the amount of water under pressure comes out of a 1/4" line

had the same thing happen to me!!! but my collection was in my new homes garage, just moved and put everything in boxxes and diden't have time to bring in home from hard days work. then over night it got down to freezeing and the water pipe in the wall broke and shot through the sheet rock wall and woulden't you know it?? right on to my boxxes!!! about 7 hrs later i found it!!!!(*^&%^#$ lot just about everthing.
                  learned a big lesson.
glad yours pulled through. make sure it is completely dry before you put back, or in about 6 months you'll be sorry...
