    Starting a collection.

Firstly may I say that I am totally blown away by this great web site, the member's collections and the thought that there is so much equipment and related items from all nations from the Second WW still in high demand today. The fact that there is still so much from a defeated German army says a lot about the quality of the equipment produced back at that time and the high regard the Allied forces had for what they were up against.
There is no substitute for quality. Well maybe quantity (as back then) but give me quality every time.
I can not imagine ever having a large collection but what I will hopefully end up with is some nice examples of eqipment used way back when.

My first ever peice was a 'Rising sun' Aussie slouch hat badge, given to me by my parents from a relative. (I'm an Aussie) Next when traveling in 1990/91 all I wanted from over seas was an American 'army' helmet. I purchased one in the States and it ended up being a Veitnam era example, not a WWII I thought it to be. Not to worry, I still have one. So present day I now like helmets and have a half a dozen, nothing to write about yet but hopefully soon I will have a couple of nice German ones. Liking helmets got me into wanting to collect some field equipment and i would like to end up with a complete infantry EM's kit.
With my budget and isolation I cant be too choosy about what I can get so i'm not just interested in one particular year or division etc. I like dated and matching items and seem to pay more than anyone else and postage is a killer to my part of the world but I love looking for what I want and doing a bit of research.
    Oh well, this is it.

Next I am after a mess kit ,'Y' straps and gas mask kit.
    Kind regards Gentlemen,
    Brad

      Hi Brad,

Completely besides my collecting field but great stuff. I think it will grow to a huge equipment collection!

        Thanks Theo,
Looking at the size of some collections I wonder if there is any thing left to be able to grow.
Not to worry, the hunt is half the fun and guys do let items go to get others.
        Regards,
        Brad

          Hello,
          that's a nice start...
there are still plenty of messkits, Y-straps and gasmask sets around. As collecting is a matter of time and even if you live in western Australia ( ), don't rush on buying german WWII items, because there are also many fakes, repros, and postwar modified items on the market.
what a shame the obverse of the buckle was completly cleaned, like if it has been sanded. I like the Brotbeutel and the Patronentaschen (those with only four stitching on the flaps are not so common), and the early type canteen is awesome. Good luck to this growing collection...

and don't forget about the Zeltbahn 31, IMO in the top 3 of the most interesting pieces of the german soldier equipments

Since last posting I have aquired a couple of items to continue my quest to equip an enlisted infantry man.
As JPhilip suggested a Zeltbahn would be a good addition so I searched the EStand and found a nice solid example with all the buttons and eyelettes. No markings to see but this is not so uncommon (apparently). A little but of rope finishes it off just nice. I do also believe it is an earlier example with the aluminium hardwear.

I have a set of RB numbered 'Y' straps from the UK, they have about 30% paint on the inside of the buckles.

Finally I have an original helmet!!!!
It is (I hope) an M35 DD with what I think is a repaint.
It is a Q66 with a size 58 liner (it fits me)

My second bread bag has no inside tabs or 'D' rings which is not so common (apparently)
see the right hand side bag.

I have a 1940 dated mess kit coming.
            I will post pictures soon.

            Cheers for now.

A pretty salty, well used 1940 dated mess kit.
I am 80% sure it is match dated but the paint on the handle casting is thick and scratched. Not the nicest example of a mess kit but I wanted an early example, matched and the price was right not to mention I have to settle my patience.

This is supposedly a post war belt buckle I won on EB@* cheap with a repro belt. Strange thinge is the reverse side with totally different strike.
Could any one tell me how this could be?

Hi Brad I like that old authentic gear of yours good start to the collection

The belt buckle looks like one of those DDR East German re-issued ones when the wall came down that went into service re-badged for the Bundeswehr. An interesting piece!

                            Hello Brad,
You did buy a nice Zeltbahn. From your pics, IMO this is not a prewar or early war with hardware & buttons made of aluminium, but most surely one with hardware made of zinc. From the features i think it was produced between 1941 and 1943. One of the numerous Zeltbahn variants.
In order to complete your "Zeltausrüstung", you also need two M1929 tent pegs, one M1901 tent pole, and one M1892 tent string.
And two straps to carry the Zelt on the belt or on the Y-straps D-rings (very nice display).
carry on the good work !
