Frentes y Hospitales crucifix
This award is likely to be unknown for many of the forum members. It's a crucufux of the front and hospitals, which was carried by many national soldiers (Franco's army in Spain) during the Spanish Civil war after an edict of a famous spanish Bishop who, of course, supported Franco. It was carried as the war was known by the national faction as "The Crusade against communism" and the figure of Christ was used in order to achieve luck and be under protection of god.

Spanish civil war relics
Those are two spanish civil war relics found in a battlefield not very far from my city. A friend of mine found many pieces and gave me those ones. They're supposed to be mortar pieces. The've really seen better days! Quite rusted maybe, but still with their shape. More than 70 years are too much to be buried...

Ostmedal from a Blue Division member
This one is quite strange because it has the typical spanish medal needle. So it is supposed to be a Blue Division (spanish volunteers army) member's Ostmedal who had that needle sewn in his medal ribbon in order to wear it in Spain (maybe due to Spanish regulations or so). The quality is superb.

Hi Laurens. I've seen other versions with a hollow back in the centre of the back side (with a round shape hole). Why that difference? It's due to the year of production or due to a different maker? I've only seen 100 maker on these ones...Where there more makers?Last edited by Gernika81; 09-23-2007, 11:48 AM.

Ricardo,
The medals with a partial hollow reverse are usually the most common ones. As far as I can remember, in the past, flat reverses were seen as 57 versions. But the length of the connection between the ring and the body of the medal (so-called 'tip of a sunburst') is important too. When there is no extension, it should be version 57.
So far, I have seen maker marks 100 and those unmarked. For me personally, it is the first time I see an Ostvolk medal with a flat reverse and the maker mark 100 (hence my interest ). Once, I noticed a package for an Ostvolk medal made by Steinhauer & Lück. A very convincing package, but so far I have not seen any medals marked accordingly.

Oh! So don't I have to worry about the possibility of having bought a 57 version instead of a pre 45 one? That extension of the medal is enough to proove that mine is pre 45?
I didn't noticed that...as these medals don't have swastika, is easy to buy a 57 version instead of an original one (I didn't know that detail of the tip of a sunburst).
Thanks for your info mate!
