What to do with an old gun cabinet

Around my neck of the woods gun cabinets can be had cheap. I really like these cabinets for display. You can build shelves in them or hang a uniform in them or make a knife display. Here are just two examples of using gun cabinets. I paid twenty dollars for each of these.

Notice the small piece of wood I screwed onto the shelf in front of the knives. This is to ensure the board they (the knives) are on won't slide forward when I open the door and damage them. You can easily make a backing for your cabinet ( You can't really see mine easily but it's the red above the small cases on the top shelf) by taking pressed board (the kind that Wal-mart has that is 1/8 inch thick or so) and stapling colored velvet to it -- of course stapling around the back into the pressed board. Then the shelves will hold up the backing. I have changed the setup on this shelf many times. Or you can use the natural wood as a backdrop.

            Dennis,
That is a good way to display larger items such as your swords. Nice work!

I've been thinking of some ways to display those WWII German daggers and parade bayonets and I think you just clinched it for me.

Nice job and I would do the same if I had another spot for the guns filling mine!

The nice thing about these cabinets is you can lock them so people won't grab the daggers without asking. The disadvantage is you need a lot of wall space.

Here are some more cheap displays for knives (although I'm well aware there are a number of folks who would never leave a knife in a scabbard -- I don't either on my really nice ones but some of you like me have so so ones and a room with not too much humidity) -- Anyway for 98ks you can take peg board and 1x2s and make a neat display using peg hooks. You can simply paint it for a rustic look or buy stick on felt and cover all of the holes except the ones for the pegs. A cool thing too is you can put this right inside the gun cabinet I was talking about or stick it on top of a shelf.

The one on left with the daggers is the same size as the 98k one with the sticky felt added. The one to the right is a spice cabinet with the shelf removed.

Here is a large counter display case I bought cheap and I decided to turn it horizontal and use the sticky felt back. To keep it from falling over I put it in an old book shelf with most of the shelves removed. Then I used L brackets to screw it to the shelf so it wouldn't move. It turned out better than I thought and it's able to be locked. To me the Ist pattern Luft sword and dagger always look great displayed together.

Great idea with the gun cabinets! I think I'm going to hit the local classified section and track one down myself.
