    Making a torso form sturdier

Probably most of you reading these threads are ten times more advanced than me but there may be some new guys who could use this info. I use those cheap Webster display torsos with the addition of a styrofoam head (with of course the use of a sharp razor knife and hot glue). They work fine for uniforms like my first photo where there is minimal equipment. However, the torsos have a hard time holding up a combat soldier with equipment. The only thing holding up the form is a small dowell rod and screw. This can be remedied easily. Just make a pattern of the bottom of the form (in cardboard) and find some plywood. Use a saber saw to cut out a hole and the shape of the pattern. This gives some support to the bottom of the form. Then use a large piece of plastic PCV pipe about a foot long. I paint mine black. Then the plastic pipe will absorb much of the weight of the display.

Here is the rod holding up the form -- not much there for support.

Here is the bottom of the form -- with the new support you won't need the screw holding the form to the rod -- the rod will not be holding up the form, it's just a guide now. Sorry about the fuzzy pictures First rule of photography USE A TRIPOD I just got lazy and it was dark
