        Armando Diaz

Marshall Armando Diaz was the one who lead the italian troops at the victory of Vittorio Veneto in the WWI. With this battle italian army take satisfaction after the defaet of Caporetto a cuople oy years before (lead by Badoglio a miserable general that will only win the war against the poor ethiopian soldiers and that will become later one of the worst Mussolini's traitors).
This medal is for the opening in Napoli of a statue dedicated to Diaz.
The medal doesn't have a ribbon. Just the pin. But i personalized it!

                      Fabio,
You have a best Italian medal collection I've ever seen. Mind you, yours is the only one I've ever seen! The fact that you can explain how and why for all of them makes it very intresting. I look forward to more.

                        Hello Fabio!

Beautiful medals and very interesting texts...
When I saw your medals, an italian march came to my mind:

                        "China su fronte
                        si ses sezzidu pesa!
                        ch'es passende
                        sa Brigata tattaresa
                        boh! boh!
                        e cun sa mannu sinna
                        sa mezzus gioventude
                        de Saldigna... "

                        Cheers!
                        Ricky

                          New stuff

                          Hello everybody.
Tonight I am going to show a multimedia performance called
                          WHEN IT ALL STARTED
Once upon a time there was a Country that thought it has won the WWI but, in fact, it has not.
This Country was Italy. That's why in 1919, one year after the end of the big war, when it was time for the winners to settle the new european boundaries, Italy understood that his diplomatic efforts to gain some Dalmatian and Istrian cities was lost. No territories for the Italians, that went into the war too late, just when it was clear that almost all the world was against German and Austrian Empire.
This situation caused a big wave of anger in the italian people.
That's why one of the most rapresentative italian's poet and war hero, Gabriele D'Annunzio, il Vate, organised a private expedition, with veterans, patriots and young men looking for fights, to conquer the City of Fiume, a marine city on the border with ex Yugoslavia, where the citizens were almost all italians.
He took Fiume without troubles because the gouvernment and the King didn't had the courage to stop an adventure that was worlwide celebrate.
Once they was there, D'Annunzio and his Legionari founded the Republic of Fiume and made party all the time with unbelieveble orgies like in the Old Romans Age (D'Annunzio was a kind of latin Oscar Wilde with a true warrior spirit)
Let's take a look at this great man in this 1922 original postcard from Fiume.

                            Fiume medal

D'Annunzio and company could act the part of the heroes for some weeks then when it was clear that other Allied nations had enough of this theatre performance, and were ready to go there and kick them in the ass, Italian gouvernment decide to send the Army before there could be bigger troubles with true losts.
So everything finished with tons of retorical celebrations and a big welcome back to the heroes.
The best part of the story are the mottos that D'Annunzio made and that will be some years later used by the fascist (A Noi! Eja, Eja, Alalà; Memento Audere Semper that means remeber always to dare and Ardisco non Ordisco), the word Legionari to call the soldiers and the very very nice medal you are going to see right now

                              Fabio,
Just so I understand this completely....D'Annunizo went to Fiume and took it over. Then he and his troops partied hard for some weeks. He was forced to leave but returned to Italy and recieved a hero's welcome? BTW, nice looking medal.

                                Fiume medal 2

This medal was commissioned from D'Annunzio to the artist De Carolis.
In the front you can admire a design of strong imèact in the Old Latins style with the latin sentence Hic Manebimus Optime (Here we remain real good)
