Any hints for new photographers?

Hi everyone

I have looked around for advice on how to take the best photo of stuff. My major issue is with macro images of say, makers marks on medal rings. Being on a tight budget I bought a second-hand digital camera it is a Fiji FinePix s3000 with six times zoom. I can't seem to get those real closer photos despite the supposedly advanced technology my camera contains. So can anyone give me any hints on how to get perfect photographs of small details and anything else really. Thanks in advance

I've only got a crappy little Fuji 205s, and initially had a lot of trouble with macro pics, but the trick is - natural light when possible, and position the camera well back and zoom in - not as close as you can get, as it 'crowds' the lighting etc.
Give it a shot. It'd be interesting to see what else we have down here

Have you read the instruction book carefully? I know it sounds a stupid question but I was struggling with my camera on macro until I read through it carefully! A tripod, natural daylight and a black non-reflective background are my three 'rules' for good macro photography

Hi there thanks for the tips. Yes I have read the instructions but to no avail. Hopefully the advice you guys have given me will be the secret to my future success. Now I just need to take the photos

You're a medal man - that explains the need for macro Good pictures so far - lighting is key, though. Just practise, practise...

Camera

I had the same problems with my camera and then I bought a set of Quantaray Close Up Filters and that did the job. I can now get the makers marks and all other details I need. Use all three filters connected together.

1) Use MACRO function
2) Shut off flash
3) Use tripod and set ISO to 100

If you want to take nice macro pictures you don't have to put the lens directly against the medal. Leave some 30cm between the lens and the medal.
