Back on this thread to show you a customized Hindsgaul mannequin representing a wounded Corporal of the Canadian Royal Engineers during the Dieppe raid, actually displayed with 20 others customized mannequins in a large exhibition dedicated to the WWII Dieppe events; Raid on Dieppe, 19th of august 1942 & liberation of the town, 1st of September 1944 (by the same Canadians who landed in 1942)

I will add soon a photo report of the exhibition which closed in 2 days...

First try

dear collectors. Using all instructions on this great topic as guidance I started practicing on painting my first mannequin. I never held a painting brush in my life so I had to learn the very basics. Mixing colour is the great challenge, and getting a good skintone is very very difficult even with the correct colours and instructions from mark. I would love some tips on how to add character to my mannequin. I painted 5 layers of skin tone trying to match the pictures shown here. For the moment the result looks ok... although a little to pink. I added a light beard or 5o clock shadow. Now I will be going for the eyebrows. The lips still look odd and I don't seem to find a good colour mix for them... its either too red, too organge, too purple...

The instructions from Mark, Jubilee help a lot and I will keep practicing my technique to match their wonderfull results.
Below you can see the results of my first attempts... some comment would be appreciated.

The lips are very difficult to achive by mixing colors from the beginning. What i do is: mix the colors for the basic skin. Enough to cover twice the whole head and have stock in a tamiya jar for future use. Then i take some of that and mix it with touches of red until the color of the lips looks natural.

Thanks for the tip! Lips finally look ok now! Eyebrows are painted and beard darkened. Going for a winter display !

Now it looks nice, well done.

As for the facial hair and 5 o'clock shadows try the dry brush technique.

very nicely done...I like the eyes looking away...That makes it more realistic. My advice would be to always look in the mirror and look at the tones of your own skin. Always watch out for much contrast in the skin colors.
